The effectiveness of ineorporating a nanofiber layer on conventional filter media has been reeognized for some time in the air filter industry. Typically, these applieations have been for dust removal and the media has demonstrated robustness for a wide range of applications. Industry leaders such as Donaldson Company (Minneapolis, MN 55431) routinely manufae-ture air filters with a nanofiber eomponent in them (Graham et al. 2002). Nanofibers are ineluded in commereial filters to serve two purposes ... [Pg.233]

For an industrial application it is necessary to separate the response of a real crack from artifacts, and to derive information about the geometry and the location of the crack. For this purpose we have developed a filter which is sensitive to the characteristic features of a signal caused by a crack and amplifies it, whereas signals without these typical features are suppressed. In Fig. 5.1 first results obtained with such an iterative filter algorithm are shown. [Pg.261]

Industrially. phosphoric(V) acid is manufactured by two processes. In one process phosphorus is burned in air and the phos-phorus(V) oxide produced is dissolved in water. It is also manufactured by the action of dilute sulphuric acid on bone-ash or phosphorite, i.e. calcium tetraoxophosphate(V). Ca3(P04)2 the insoluble calcium sulphate is filtered off and the remaining solution concentrated. In this reaction, the calcium phosphate may be treated to convert it to the more soluble dihydrogenphosphatc. CafHjPOjj. When mixed with the calcium sulphate this is used as a fertiliser under the name "superphosphate . [Pg.246]

The 0 -S.V alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution Is prepared by dissolving 16g. of potassium hydroxide pellets in 500 ml. of alcohol (or industrial spirit) contained in a bottle closed by a cork. After standing for 24 hours, the clear solution is decanted or filtered from the residue of potassium carbonate. It is said that a solution in methyl alcohol has better keeping qualities than that in ethyl alcohol. [Pg.290]

Dissolve 1 g. of the ketomethylene compound and 1 1 g. or 2 2 g. of pure benzaldehyde (according as to whether the compound may be regarded as RCOCHjR or as RCHjCOCHjR ) in about 10 ml. of rectified (or methylated) spirit, add 0 5 ml. of 5.N -sodium hydroxide solution, shake and allow the mixture to stand for about an hour at room temperature. The benzylidene derivative usually crystallises out or will do so upon scratching the walls of the vessel with a glass rod. Filter off the solid, wash it with a little cold alcohol, and recrystallise it from absolute alcohol (or absolute industrial spirit). [Pg.345]

Air. Biofilters are an effective way of dealing with air from industrial processes that use halogenated solvents such chloromethane, dichioromethane, chloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane and vinyl chloride, that support aerobic growth (26). Both compost-based dry systems and trickling filter wet systems are in use. Similar filters could be incorporated into pump-and-treat operations. [Pg.32]

The earliest commercially available filters were manufactured in two pore sizes 0.45 and 0.8 pm. The 0.45 pm-rated membranes were considered to be stefilizing-grade filters and were successfully used in the sterile filtration of pharmaceuticals and parenterals. The membrane filters were qualified using Serratia marcescens a standard bacterium, having dimensions of 0.6 x 1 pm. However, in the late 1960s it became apparent that the matrix of the 0.45 pm-rated filters could be penetrated by some pseudomonad-like organisms (1). For sterile filtration apphcations in the 1990s, 0.2 pm-rated membranes are the industry standard in the manufacture of sterile parenterals and pharmaceuticals. [Pg.139]

The protein fraction is filtered and dried to become high (60%) protein content com gluten meal. The starch slurry can be dewatered and dried to produce regular com starch. Dry starch can be sold as is or heat treated in the presence of acid catalysts to produce dextrins. Or, it is chemically modified before dewatering and drying to produce modified starches used in food and industrial appHcations. Lasdy, it can be hydroly2ed to produce corn sweeteners. [Pg.360]

Acryhcs and modacryhcs are also useflil industrial fibers. Fibers low in comonomer content, such as Dolan 10 and Du Font s PAN Type A, have exceptional resistance to chemicals and very good dimensional stabihty under hot—wet conditions. These fibers are useflil in industrial filters, battery separators, asbestos fiber replacement, hospital cubical curtains, office room dividers, uniform fabrics, and carbon fiber precursors. The exceUent resistance of acryhc fibers to sunlight also makes them highly suitable for outdoor use. Typical apphcations include modacryhcs, awnings, sandbags, tents, tarpauhns, covers for boats and swimming pools, cabanas, and duck for outdoor furniture (59). [Pg.283]
