Filter food

Other animals, sponges lack a nervous system and have no true musculature. They are benthic and filter food particles suspended in the water. They have no specialized organ systems, often they are amorphous and asymmetrical animals. Only a few different cell types are encountered within sponges which are functionally independent to the extent that an entire sponge can be dissociated into its constituent cells. Special flagellated cells called choanocytes generate currents that help maintain water circulation within the sponge and capture food particles. [Pg.129]

Nonwoven wipe categories include products for babies and adults, the food service and electronics industries, medical and clean room appHcations, industrial cleaning, computer diskettes, and household products such as dusters, tea towels, shoe cleaning cloths, towelettes, and hand towels. Nonwoven fabrics are used to filter air, water, petroleum (qv), food, and beverages. Nonwovens loaded with abrasives, cleansers, or finishes can be found in a variety of products used by many industries and in many homes to scour or poHsh. Elemental phosphoms from the electrothermal process is a distilled product of high purity and yields phosphoric acid pure enough for most industrial uses without any further treatment. The main impurity is ca 20—100 ppm arsenic present in the phosphoms as the element and in the phosphoric acid as arsenious acid. To remove the arsenic, the phosphoric acid destined for food, pharmaceutical, and some industrial-grade appHcations is treated with excess hydrogen sulfide, filtered, and blown with air to strip out excess H2S. This treatment generally reduces the arsenic content of the phosphoric acid to less than 0.5 ppm. The small amount of filter cake is disposed of in approved chemical landfills. [Pg.327]

A portion of the effluent is recirculated, ia order to smooth out flow, keep the food concentration constant, lower film thickness and control psychoda flies, and reseed the appHed sewage with acclimatized organisms. The psychoda, or filter fly is a very small iasect that breeds ia thick trickling-filter slimes. It does not bite, but can be a nuisance. Its radius of flight is small, but it can be carried great distances by the wiad. The fly can be controlled ia the development phase by occasional flooding of the filter or chlorination of the appHed sewage. [Pg.284]

Other Uses. The quantity of coal used for purposes other than combustion or processing is quite small (2,6). Coal, especially anthracite, has estabHshed markets for use as purifying and filtering agents in either the natural form or converted to activated carbon (see Carbon). The latter can be prepared from bituminous coal or coke, and is used in sewage treatment, water purification, respirator absorbers, solvent recovery, and in the food industry. Some of these markets are quite profitable and new uses are continually being sought for this material. [Pg.237]
