Filament winding tape laying Tape is laid side by side or overlapped to form a structure. [Pg.391]

Unidirectional construction Refers to fibers that are oriented in the same direction, such as unidirectional fabric, tape, or laminate, often called UD. Such parallel alignment is included in pultrusion and filament winding applications. [Pg.507]

Figure 5.26 shows the principle of filament or tape winding. [Pg.748]

Filament winding Process in which continuous strands of roving or roving tape are wound, at a specified pitch and tension, onto the outside surface of a mandrel. Roving is saturated with liquid resin... [Pg.151]

On-line consolidation techniques are commonly used in manufacturing processes, such as filament winding and tape laying. Despite differences in the machines used to implement these two manufacturing processes, similar procedures are required to ensure complete bonding between the composite layers. The basic components of on-line consolidation process are illustrated in Figure 7.2. [Pg.211]

Filament-Winding. This requires a mandrel to shape the desired finished product. Continuous filament or woven tape is fed through a liquid resin bath to impregnate it, and then wound onto the mandrel in a calculated pattern to optimize the final properties (Table 15.27). The assembly is oven-cured. A collapsible mandrel can then be removed from the plastic product or the mandrel can be left as a part of the finished product. These are the strongest plastic products ever made. Typical products are pipes, tanks, and pressure bottles. Other suggested products... [Pg.686]

Filament winding (FW) is a fabrication technique for forming reinforced plastic parts of high strength/modulus and lightweight. It is made possible by exploiting the remarkable strength properties of their continuous fibers or filaments encased in a matrix of a resinous material. For this process, the reinforcement consists of filamentous non-metallic or metallic materials processed either in fibrous or tape forms.488 489... [Pg.482]

The ATL and AFP processes are thus a cross between filament winding with its elaborate automated patterns of fibre laydown and unidirectional prepreg layup with its reliance on the autoclave. The use of automated robotic machinery for the layup gives increased layup speed (vital to economically manufacture these large items in feasible timescale), consistency and freedom from errors compared with manual techniques, as well as ensuring precision in the placement of the tows and tapes. [Pg.62]

This process offers a method of producing more predictable laminated structures, for high performance applications. Prepreg tapes are mainly made of the higher performance materials, such as epoxy/carbon or PEEK/carbon. This system can also be used in filament winding. [Pg.383]
