Figurate numbers

The first number is the chapter number, the second number is the section number and the third number (if present) is the subsection number. The number after the dash is the figure number.

Note that here again we continue our usual practice of continuing equation and figure numbering through a set of related chapters. 

Entries in CAPITAL LETTERS refer to the titles of individual preparations. Entries in ordinary type letters refer to principal products and major by-products, special reagents or intermediates (which may or may not be isolated), compounds mentioned in the text, Notes or Discussions as having been prepared by the method given, and apparatus described in detail or illustrated by a figure. Numbers in boldface type denote the volumes. Numbers in ordinary type indicate pages on which a compound or subject is mentioned in the indicated volume...

Are tables and figures numbered consecutively and in the proper order Are they formatted in a conventional manner ... 

In the following tables we try to show the data considered in the construction of Fig. 1. Data on the selenides and tellurides is included to widen the base for interpretation. It is quickly evident that this data base is still very sketchy. In part this is due to the very broad featured results that come from the/ " d metals, but even where sharp spectra could be obtained there are still many gaps, eg. LuS and TmS, XPS YbS, optical and XPS. [The f2 etc. denote figure numbers in the references indicated auxiliary references rAb etc. can be found after the references to the main textl.

The association of numbers with patterns was common in ancient Greece. The so-called figurate numbers 3, 6, 10 and 15 given in the text are examples of triangular numbers other examples include square (1, 4, 9, 16, 25,...) and pentagonal (1, 5,12, 22, 35,...) numbers.

In this example, the numbers 3, 6, 10 and 15 are known as triangular numbers and their relative magnitude is easily seen by the increasing number of dots used to represent them...

Capitalize the word Figure when it is followed by the figure number. 

Put one figure on each page, and label the page with the figure number only. Submit captions as part of your text. 

Note the figure number and the first author s surname either on the back or on the front of each piece of artwork, about 1 in. (2.5 cm) clear of the image area. Do not write on the front or back of the image area write only in the margins. 

Every figure must have a caption that includes the figure number and a brief, informative description, preferably in nonsentence format.

Each figure must have a figure number and a short legend prominently displayed, and it should be referred to by number iu the body of the report.
