Field clean energy

Plug Power, Inc, of Latham, NY manufactured six alpha fuel cells to be field tested as part of the Clean Energy Initiative, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), Uniondale, NY. Hofstra University was the site of the first tests, which began in February 2000. By the 60-day mark, the fuel cells had generated approximately 1900 kWh and operated in parallel with LIPA s T D system. 

The field of catalysis enjoys significant scientific prominence due to its importance in areas that affect the general public—clean energy, environmental protection, and conversion of sustainable feedstocks, for example. These driving forces, among others, will guide research efforts in our field for the foreseeable future. This volume of the Royal Society of Chemistry s Specialist Periodical Reports Catalysis book series addresses these issues directly, providing up-to-date reviews on subjects of current interest.

Many states such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, New York, Wisconsin and California support active energy conservation funds that provide incentives for homeowners and businesses to invest in more efficient equipment and reduce consumer energy bills while avoiding powerplant emissions. Fifteen states have funds that invest in renewable energy, funds that will total 4 billion by 2017. Other states such as Oregon, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York, field green power options to utility customers Connecticut s new Clean Energy Option will be offered soon in the state.

Sodium nitrate is also used in formulations of heat-transfer salts for he at-treatment baths for alloys and metals, mbber vulcanization, and petrochemical industries. A mixture of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate is used to capture solar energy (qv) to transform it into electrical energy. The potential of sodium nitrate in the field of solar salts depends on the commercial development of this process. Other uses of sodium nitrate include water (qv) treatment, ice melting, adhesives (qv), cleaning compounds, pyrotechnics, curing bacons and meats (see Food additives), organics nitration, certain types of pharmaceutical production, refining of some alloys, recovery of lead, and production of uranium.
