Fibroblasts collagen production

Finally, a direct approach to inhibit fibroblasts has been considered. However, clinical trials with agents such as colchicine and penicillamine, which have some ability to suppress fibroblast collagen production, have not been successful (Cegla et al., 1975 Goodman and Turner-Warwick, 1978 Meier-Sydow et al., 1979 Liebetrau et al., 1982).

Some biflavonoids exhibited cytotoxic/anticancer activity.[34-38] For example, ginkgetin (7) was cytotoxic to hirnian ovarian adenocarcinoma (OVCAR)-3 cells, but not to other cells such as Hep G2 and HeLa.[39] Taiwanhomoflavone-A (8) showed cytotoxicity against several cancer cell lines. Epithelial Cell Injury. Fibroblast proliferation, and thus collagen production, is controlled by an intact epithelial cell layer. Thus it has been suggested that acute injury to epithelial cells could allow fibroblasts to grow undisturbed, producing excessive collagen that would lead to fibrosis (Haschek and Witschi, 1979).
