Paper pulp fibers

Fibrillated Fibers. Instead of extmding cellulose acetate into a continuous fiber, discrete, pulp-like agglomerates of fine, individual fibrils, called fibrets or fibrids, can be produced by rapid precipitation with an attenuating coagulation fluid. The individual fibers have diameters of 0.5 to 5.0 ]lni and lengths of 20 to 200 )Jm (Fig. 10). The surface area of the fibrillated fibers are about 20 m /g, about 60—80 times that of standard textile fibers. These materials are very hydrophilic an 85% moisture content has the appearance of a dry soHd (72). One appHcation is in a paper stmcture where their fine fiber size and branched stmcture allows mechanical entrapment of small particles. The fibers can also be loaded with particles to enhance some desired performance such as enhanced opacity for papers. When filled with metal particles it was suggested they be used as a radar screen in aerial warfare (73). [Pg.297]

P perApplications. In beater additions, the latex is mixed with the beaten paper pulp either by addition at the beater or to the stock chest at the wet end of the paper machine. In either case, the pH of the pulp is reduced to 4.0—4.5, usually by the addition of a solution of alum to the pulp—latex mixture which has been thoroughly agitated. The latex, which for this appHcation must be based on an anionic emulsifier, coagulates as the pH drops. The latex soHds separate ia intimate associatioa with the pulp fibers. The pulp is thea screeaed and the paper web formed ia the coaveatioaal way. A latex for this purpose must possess the proper balance between mechanical and chemical stabiHty. [Pg.260]

These cylinder units are applicable to almost any form of sheet material that is not injuriously affected by contact with steam-heated metal surfaces. They are used chiefly when the sheet possesses certain properties such as a tendency to shrink or lacks the mechanical strength necessary for most types of continuous-sheeting air diyers. Applications are to diy films of various sorts, paper pulp in sheet form, paper sheets, paperboard, textile piece goods and fibers, etc. In some cases, imparting a special finish to the surface of the sheet may be an objective. [Pg.1092]

Paper pulp and fiber cloths are excellent materials for precoats and filter aids. Paper pulp gives a high rate of flow, is easily discharged and shows little tendency to clog. [Pg.128]

Pads of a mixture of paper pulp and asbestos fiber are used in bacteriological filtrations. In sheet form it is employed in the laboratory for all kinds of filtration. Filter papers are made in many grades of porosity for use in porcelain and glass funnels. Industrially, paper in the form of sheets is used directly or as a precoat in filter presses. [Pg.128]

Chlorine dioxide has an odd number of electrons and is a paramagnetic yellow gas. Despite the environmental damage it creates, it is often used to bleach paper pulp, because it can oxidize the various pigments in the pulp without degrading the wood fibers. [Pg.763]

C. sativa is cultivated for several purposes. Actually, the main legal purpose is the production of hemp fibers and pulp. From these materials paper, clothes and ropes are made [12] and several Western coimtries have already legalized the cultivation of C. sativa for these purposes. In research, the drug-type of C. sativa is also cultivated, however, only for the investigation and determination of forensic studies for chemotype separation. The growth for medicinal purposes is hardly performed, hi the Netherlands C. sativa is cultivated for medicinal purposes under strictly controlled regulations by the company Bedrocan. In this chapter we discuss basic aspects of the cultivation of C. sativa and the optimization of THC content in the plant. [Pg.16]

Industrial surfactants find uses in almost every industry, from asphalt manufacturing to carpet fibers, from pulp and paper production to leather processing. Examples of the types of chemicals used as surfactants are fatty alcohol sulfates, alkanolamides, alkoxylates, sulfosuccinates, amines, quaternaries, phosphate esters, acid esters, blockcopolymers, betaines, imidazolines, alkyl sulfonates, etc. [Pg.283]

Because the first method is not always very satisfactory from the aesthetic standpoint and because of the limitations of the second, conservators have sought to expand their repertoire with alternative procedures. One possibility which has attracted recent interest is the use of a suspension of paper fibers to fill losses in a way that is analogous to the manufacture of paper. The paper pulp to be used for repairing an art work, for instance, can be obtained by the maceration of handmade rag-fiber paper in an ordinary food blender. [Pg.95]
