Feed rate test work

A measure is preventive if it prevents the occurrence of a runaway, a decomposition, or a hazardous secondary reaction. The system conditions remain close to operating conditions. Excessive increases in temperatures and/or pressures are avoided. Preventive measures include feed rate control systems, interlocks to prevent the reaction from starting unless sufficient diluent is present or the cooling system is working, and tests for the presence of catalysts or unwanted impurities. Preventive measures are always to be preferred over protective or mitigating (defensive) measures. 

To properly design and size sedimentation equipment, several pieces of information are required. Some information is unique to the job site (application, feed rate, etc.), while other data are supplied from similar references or from test work. Site-specific information from the plant site includes... 

A two-week plant test was conducted in January-February 2000 to gather engineering data for the treatment of low-iron concentrates. Blends of Sullivan and Red Dog containing up to 100% Red Dog, were treated at various feed rates. The plant successfully treated 100% Red Dog concentrate at 18 t/h, yielding 96% zinc extraction, and up to 21 t/h was also explored. These results surpassed expectations based on previous in-house laboratory and plant-scale test work. Liibberstedt [64] tested three different hydrocyclones for HeLa cell separation a 7 mm Bradley [67], a 10 mm Mozley (Richard Mozley Ltd., Redruth, UK), and a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver (Dorr-Oliver GmbH, Wiesbaden, Germany) (the dimension quoted here is the diameter of the cylindrical part of each hydrocyclone). The best results were obtained with the Dorr-Oliver hydrocyclone (Fig. 3), which produced a cell separation efficiency of 81 % when working at a pressure drop of 300 kPa and a flow rate of 2.8 L min When operating with two 10 mm Dorr-Oliver connected in series (the overflow of the first as feed for the second) at 200 kPa, the global efficiency of the arrangement was 94% [65]. These experimental values confirm the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions that high levels of efficiencies for mammalian cells could be achieved with small diameter hydrocyclones [46].

A through-flow system with a continuous feed from two pump systems (illustrated in Figure 4.3.2) was used in order to minimize the rate of depletion of PAHs due to adsorption to the walls of the system, and to uptake by passive samplers deployed in the tank. The first pump provided a circulation of the Maas river water at a constant 10 Lh-1 flow rate, and the second one added a solution of 16 PAHs (prepared by the dilution of a stock working solution containing equal concentrations of the test 16 PAHs) in acetonitrile at a rate of 0.1 mF min-1.
