Paradoxically, such a mechanical fatigue apparently acts as a treatment for relaxation of stress and allows flaws, located at the stress areas to be partly dissipated. Also, mechanical fatigue treatments can eliminate effects of a previous thermal treatment. Two samples that were initially different became more similar with regard to their crystallinity after 50 x 103 cycles. Normally, dietary tyramine is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract by MAO and is not absorbed. In the presence of MAOI, however, all of its potent sympathomimetic actions are seen. Other side effects of MAOI include excessive CNS stimulation, orthostatic hypotension, weight gain, and in rare cases hepatotoxicity. Because the monoamine oxidase inhibitors exhibit greater toxicity, yet no greater therapeutic response than other, newer agents, clinical use has been markedly curtailed. The primary use for MAOIs is in the treatment of atypical depressions, eg, those associated with increased appetite, phobic anxiety, hypersomnolence, and fatigues, but not melancholia (2). [Pg.466]

Bradycardia Bradycardia is a slow heart rate (60 beats per minute or slower) that does not meet the body s metabolic demands. Symptoms of bradycardia include dizziness, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, or fainting spells. This can be compared to tachycardia, which is an extremely rapid heart rate, usually signified by a pulse of over 100 beats per minute. Adults usually have a resting heart rate of 70-80 beats per minute, although well-trained athletes can have resting rates in the 50 s or 60 s. Newborn babies have a normal heart rate of 120-160 beats per minute. A slowed heart rate can lead to a variety of other problems. First aid treatment may include administration of oxygen. [Pg.522]

A distinction must be made regarding the length of service of the pressure reducing systems. Fatigue failure of any mechanical system depends on time, i.e., the number of cycles to failure. Therefore, the treatment required for a continuous service may not be justified for a short term service. A System in short term service is defined as one which operates a total of 12 hours or less during the life of the plant. Pressure relief valves typically meet this limit. Systems in short term service exceeding the screening criteria indicated above should be evaluated. [Pg.213]

Stainless steels are subject to fatigue failure under dry conditions as are all metallic materials, having distinct fatigue limits where level is dependent on steel type and heat treatment. The limits can be depressed by the simultaneous action of a corrodent, the degree depending upon the nature of the corrodent. Under severe conditions the limit can be displaced to very low values and it is customary to describe resistance by an endurance limit, that is the cyclic stress to give rupture at a specific number of cycles when in contact with a specific corrodent.
