Respired air is saturated with moisture, after removal of which it contains normally some 4 per cent, of carbon dioxide and 16 to 17 per cent, of oxygen. These amounts vary both with the individual and with circumstances. Thus Thomson 3 found that the expired air of the average Manchester citizen contained 4 per cent, of carbon dioxide, whereas an average of 5 per cent, was observed in country districts,... [Pg.163]

Deiss (1941) found that the corrosion products freshly formed on zinc in the country were rich in carbonate, but these in time became enriched in basic zinc sulfate or chloride that had not been leached out by rain. As long as carbonate remains present in the coating, it is protective, and inclusion of sulfate or chloride at first increases adherence and protectivity. At a later period, the carbonate begins to disappear and the basic sulfate is transformed into neutral soluble sulfate, which can be washed out by rainwater. The metal attack then recommences. In country districts the first part of the cycle had not ended in 50 years, whereas an end point had been reached after an exposure of 80 years in a large city. [Pg.290]

A plot of the attachment coefficient, p, of radon decay product ions is shown in Figure 2.3 (Chamberlain, 1991). The line is Equation (2.2) with the diffusion coefficient value, D = 7 X 10 m s Vm = 44 ms and a = 1. In the natural aerosol size distribution, typical of well-populated country districts, Junge s (1963) natural aerosol size distribution includes particles such as sea salt and resuspended dust which extend the distribution at the large-diameter end, the rate constant for attachment = 2.1 x 10 s , and since A = 1.7 x 10 m for the Junge s aerosol, the corresponding value of the attachment coefficient is P = 1.2x10 m s . Measured values for the attachment coefficient p for outdoor aerosols... [Pg.20]

The FDA is headed by the Commissioner of Food and Dmgs. This position is not a Cabiaet-level office but falls within the PubHc Health Service (PHS), a division within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The post of FDA Commissioner is subject to HHS pohtical clearance and Senate confirmation, and the Commissioner is ultimately accountable to HHS, Congress, and the President of the United States. The Commissioner has a staff to assist ia poHcy making and several deputy commissioners to oversee operation of ah. the subordinate units. FDA has six regional offices within the country, each responsible for a section of the country, and 21 district offices. Persons with technical background typicahy work ia one of FDA s chemistry laboratories or as investigators or consumer safety officers. [Pg.83]

The anxiety disorders are common and surprisingly disabling conditions. Studies on the health economics of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder document the cost to the individual and to society. Attention has focused on the major psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia and the dementias. Studies suggest that many anxiety disorders are of early onset and too often chronic they are quite common and impose a heavy burden on society. More studies will be needed to discern the fine grain in the survey material and to identify more precisely the location and type of societal costs. These factors will vary from country to country, from district to district, between men and women and between various age groups. [Pg.65]

These detailed studies on individual mine district suggest that carbon in carbonates was derived from the country rocks underlying the ore deposits and oxygen in ore fluids is controlled by origin of ore fluids (mostly meteoric water) and boiling of ore fluids. [Pg.147]

Unfortunately tectonic situations of the regions other than Northeast Honshu of Neogene age are not well understood. However, it seems evident that even in the regions other than Northeast Honshu epithermal Au-Ag vein-type deposits formed when the uplift started and the area of land expanded. In addition to the paleontologic data, the country rocks of epithermal Au—Ag mine districts also suggest that epithermal Au-Ag vein-type deposits have formed under the subaeiial condition welded tuff occasionally occurs in the mine area (e.g., Sado, Nebazawa, Northeast Hokkaido) and in general submarine sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks are poor or absent in the Au-Ag mine districts (e.g., epithermal An-Ag vein-type deposits in Kyushu). [Pg.203]

The development of district heating systems is linked with the development of other systems such as combined heat and power systems, which generate waste heat, together with power. These increase the fuel use efficiency [35]. Also heat pumps should be introduced in residential heating systems [18]. In some countries like Norway, district heating system s GHG emissions have been compared with those of individual heating systems and it has been found that the first have lower C02 emissions. [Pg.294]

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the second largest city of the country. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts and 6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction [6]. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCM City) are the main waste generators with 8,000 ton/day (2.92 million ton/a), accounted for 45.24% of total urban MSW, whereby HCM city produces 5,500 tons/day and the left is generated by Hanoi (2006-2007) [7]. [Pg.447]

III.b.1.4. Drugs and therapeutics committees in districts and hospitals. A drugs and therapeutics committee (DTC), also called a pharmacy and therapeutics committee, is a committee designated to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines in the facility or area under its jurisdiction. Such committees are well-established in industrial countries as a successful way of promoting more rational, cost-effective use of medicines in hospitals (Table 7). Governments may encourage hospitals to have DTCs by making it an accreditation requirement to various professional societies. DTC members should represent all the major specialities and the administration they should also be independent and declare any conflict of interest. A senior doctor... [Pg.88]
