Microstructure is of equal importance to composition. This feature is the key to most mechanical and optical properties, and it can promote or diminish the characteristics of key crystals in glass-ceramics. It is clear that microstructure, is not an independent variable. It obviously depends on the bulk composition and crystalline phase assemblage, and it also can be modified, often dramatically, by varying the thermal treatment. [Pg.5]

In the mold design, design of the mold with specific supplementary geometry, usually on the core side, is quite complicated by the inclusion of projection and depression [20]. The scale-up of filtration centrifuges is usually done on an area basis, based on small-scale tests. Buchner funnel-type tests are not of much value here because the driving force for filtration is not only due to the static head but also due to the centrifugal forces on the Hquid in the cake. A test procedure has been described with a specially designed filter beaker to measure the intrinsic permeabiHty of the cake (7). The best test is, of course, with a small-scale model, using the actual suspension. Many manufacturers offer small laboratory models for such tests. The tiansition from a choice of multiple fossil fuels to various ranks of coal, with the subbituminous varieties a common choice, does in effect entail a fuel-dependent size aspect in furnace design. A controlling factor of furnace design is the ash content and composition of the coal. If wall deposition thereof (slagging) is not properly allowed for or controlled, the furnace may not perform as predicted. Furnace size varies with the ash content and composition of the coals used. MaintainabiUty is a characteristic of design, installation, and operation, usually expressed as the probabiUty that a system can be restored to specified operable conditions within a specified interval of time when maintenance is performed in accordance with prescribed procedures. The ease of fault detection, isolation, and repair are all influenced by system design and are principal factors contributing to maintainabiUty. Also contributing is the supply of spare parts, the supporting repair organization, and preventative maintenance practices. MaintainabiUty must be designed into the equipment. Peroxide cure systems, which result ia carbon—carbon bonds, result ia a range of sulfur cross-links varyiag from 1 to > 30 sulfur atoms per cross-link, and heat resistance improves as the number of more thermally stable short cross-links predominates. DP Speed Factor. Pumping-speed efficiency depends on trap, valve, and system design. For gases having velocities close to the molecular velocity of the DP top jet, system-area utilization factors of 0.24 are the maximum that can be anticipated eg, less than one quarter of the molecules entering the system can be pumped away where the entrance area is the same as the cross-sectional area above the top jet (see Fig. 4). The system speed factor can be quoted together with the rate of contamination from the pump set. Utilization factors of <0.1 for N2 are common. [Pg.370]
