Eyebolts

The following rule applies to all compressed gases Compressed gas cylinders should be firmly secured at all times. For temporary use, a clamp that attaches to the laboratory bench top and has a belt for the cylinder will suffice (Fig. 10). Eyebolts and chains should be used to secure cylinders in permanent installations. 

In situ turbidity determinations using a Secchi disk are related to, but do not strictly correspond to suspended solids determinations [15]. The disk is a circular plate of about 20 cm in diameter made of sheet steel or other metal, and is painted with alternating black and white quadrants on its upper face. A rope or chain calibrated in meters is attached to the disk via an eyebolt at the center of the disk, so that the disk hangs horizontally. For a reading, the disk is lowered into the water until the black and white painted quadrants appear to be uniformly gray due to the turbidity of the water, and the depth at which this occurs is recorded. It is then lowered a few meters more and then... 

Eyebolts on motors are not suitable for lifting the entire pump and motor assembly. The pump manufacturer s manual shaU provide lifting instmctions.

Some larger components are fitted with a drilled and tapped hole to accept an eyebolt to simplify lifting. Collar eyebolts, manufactured to BS4278 1984 are available with threads from 6 to 52mm with larger sizes available to order. Imperial threads are available for replacement on older equipment. Typical SWL of an eyebolt having an M45 thread is 8 tonnes. 

Collar eyebolts may be used up to the SWL for axial lifting only. Eyebolts with a link (Fig. 19.14), offer considerable advantages over collar eyebolts, when loading needs to be applied at angles to the axis (Fig. 19.15). Their SWL is relatively greater than those of the plain collar eye-bolt and the load can be applied at any angle. 

The maximum recommended working load at various angles (as indicated in Fig, 19.15) is set out in Table 19,4 for collar eyebolts and in Table 19.5 for eyebolts with a link.
