Eye safety

Nearly 500,000 eye iryuries occur in the workplace every year, just in the United States. Experts say that 90 percent of those injuries could have been avoided simply if workers were more safety conscious and if they used the proper eye protection. 

Breaking down these injuries, it adds up to more than 2,000 work-related eye ii juries each day Most of those injuries occurred while the workers were performing their regular job. Of those injuries, between 10 and 20 percent are disabling. This means the damage to one or both eyes was serious enough to result in temporary or even permanent loss of sight. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that the majority of employees who injure their eyes were either not wearing any eye protection at the time of their accident, or weren t wearing the right kind of protective eyewear for the particular job.

Safety. Shampoos generally do not represent a hazard with regard to skin and eye safety once used, shampoos are almost immediately rinsed and have Httie contact time on sensitive areas. To assure this safety, provisions to test the finished product for skin and eye irritation should be made. 

Skin should be protected by gloves (preferably nitrile or butyl rubber), boots, and long-sleeve clothing. For the protection of eyes, safety glasses with side shields or splash goggles are the best choice when handling liquid chemicals. If spray equipment is used, proper respiratory protection may be needed. If any contact with the chemical occurs, the affected area has to be washed with soap and water immediately solvents should not be used. In extreme cases, proper medical help may be required. 

All these applications have different instrumental configurations and in many cases the laser can be delivered to the analysis point via fibre optics. This provides an implementation challenge as laser exposure and eye safety are paramount concerns particularly in a manufacturing environment. Although mentioned briefly here Raman PAT applications are likely to be an area of significant growth over the coming years. 

Detailed instructions for the use of the Raman spectrometer will be provided in the laboratory. It is particularly important to follow all safety instructions regarding the use of the excitation laser, since serious eye damage can occur if the beam, or even a small reflection from it, should strike the eye. Safety goggles must be worn when inserting samples in the beam and when adjusting the opties for maximum signal. 

Safety showers Safety showers (Figure 1.10) are used when corrosive chemicals are spilled on the body or clothing and in case of fire on the clothing or body. Remove the affected article of clothing before using the shower. The shower also may be used to flush the eyes with water in the event any chemical comes into contact with the eye. Safety showers should be checked regularly for proper operation.
