Mirel P(3HB-4HB) can be extruded into sheets with single screw extruders and compounded with additives in a twin screw extruder. Tianan P(3HB-4HB) and Tianan PVHB can be compounded with additives in a twin screw extruder. Currently, Tianan P(3HB-4HB) and Tianan PVHB do not provide an extrusion grade plastic and thus are not typically extruded, blow molded, or thermoformed.

For low density packaging and insulation foam products, complete extrusion lines are available from several specialist plastics machinery manufacturers which may use one long single screw or twin screw extruder or two single screw extruders in tandem. For the extrusion process, plastic in the form of pellets or powder (dry blends) is fed into a heated cylinder where rotating screws homogenise it and squeeze it through a die to give a finished or semi-finished product. Pellets are used in single-screw extruders and powders are used in twin-screw extruders. The die is designed to produce the desired shape of the end product. 

Debiagi et al. (2010) investigated the production of foam composites by extrusion, from the mixture cassava starch, glycerol (plasticizer), and two different types of natural fibers (oat hulls and sugarcane bagasse). The composites were prepared in a single screw extruder, with three different levels of each fiber (0, 5, and 10 g/100 g starch), two levels of humidity (18 and 26%), and a fixed level of glycerol (20 g/100 g solids). The addition of fibers reduced the water solubility index of the foams.
