A significant feature distinguishing extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma from other tumors vhth similar morphology such as other types of chondrosarcoma or tumors with myxoid stroma is the association with various specific non-random cytogenetic abnormalities, namely the translocations t(9 22)(q22 ql2), t(9 17)(q22 qll.2) and t(9 15)(q22 q21), which are not found in any other tumor even in chondrosarcoma of bony origin. In addition to these translocations, other genetic abnormalities such as trisomies of Iq, 7, 8, 12, 18, and 19 chromosomes were described in several cases of this tumor. [Pg.144]

The t(9 17)(q22 qll.2) is the second translocation associated with about 15% of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma that involves the above-described CHN gene... [Pg.144]

Since extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma has no specific immunohistochemi-cal profile and its morphology resembles other mesenchymal tumors, the above-mentioned translocations are pathognomonic for this tumor and can be used as further specific molecular markers for the diagnosis of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma. [Pg.145]
