Obtained by solvent extraction using petroleum hydrocarbons, or to a lesser extent by expression using continuous screw-press operations, of the seeds of either Glycine max (Leguminosae) or Glycine soja (Leguminosae). The oil is refined, deodorized, and clarified by filtration at about 0°C. Any phospholipids or sterols present are removed by refining with alkali. [Pg.723]

By expression we are to understand the process of separating solids from liquids by means of force. Presses are usually used for expression, and are divided into screw presses, lever presses, hydraulic presses, etc. The ordinary screw press shown in our engraving is of great use. The ordinary meat chopper, with a knife in one piece, and costing 1.50, is a valuable aid to expression. Horizontal screw presses of the same general appearance express as well as cut... [Pg.379]

Expression. Both sedimentation and filtration are suitable separation techniques when the mixture of liquid and solids is sufficiently mobile to allow pumping, or similar method of motion, of the fluid to a barrier which retains the solid but not the liquid. If such movement is not possible then separation can be accomplished by compressing the mixture under conditions which permit the liquid to escape while retaining the solid between the compressing surfaces. This technique is called expression. Design of expression equipment is varied. Batch systems usually operate by the application of hydraulic pressure in units such as the box press, pot press, curb press and cage press. Continuous expression utilises equipment such as screw presses, roller mills, and belt presses [23]. [Pg.153]

In gas-assisted mechanical expression, liquid CO is introduced into the screw press under high pressure. This process takes advantage of the high solubility of dense CO in oil to enhance the extraction yield. Oilseed cell structure swells and eventually ruptures... [Pg.126]

The expressive forces are high so that screw presses are rugged machines, and the shell can only have fairly coarse perforations. Accordingly, the liquid produced in a screw press will almost certainly need a stage of filtration after the press. [Pg.192]

A similar function to that of the screw press, i.e. the expression of liquids contained in natural products, can be achieved by means of rollers, or vertically mounted discs (rotating on axes slightly inclined down from the horizontal so that there is a pinch zone at the bottom of Ihe rotation) - but neither is a filtration prcxress. [Pg.192]

Expression Dewaterings of Fibrous Materials. Fibrous materials are frequently dewatered in belt-filter, screw, disk, and roU presses and in batch pot and cage presses. Table 1 Hsts appHcations of screw, roU, and pot presses. Screw and high pressure belt presses are continuous and have replaced batch pot and cage presses in most appHcations. Traditionally, however, batch presses have been used for squee2ing cocoa butter from cocoa beans, which require pressures up to 41 MPa (6000 psi) (39). A description of many types of batch presses is included in Reference 40. [Pg.19]
