Explicit mechanism

Explicit mechanisms attempt to include all nonmethane hydrocarbons believed present in the system with an explicit representation of their known chemical reactions. Atmospheric simulation experiments with controlled NMHC concentrations can be used to develop explicit mechanisms. Examples of these are Leone and Seinfeld (164), Hough (165) and Atkinson et al (169). Rate constants for homogeneous (gas-phase) reactions and photolytic processes are fairly well established for many NMHC. Most of the lower alkanes and alkenes have been extensively studied, and the reactions of the higher family members, although little studied, should be comparable to the lower members of the family. Terpenes and aromatic hydrocarbons, on the other hand, are still inadequately understood, in spite of considerable experimental effort. The mechanisms for the NMHCs (except DMS) required to fully characterise OH chemistry were extracted from a recently updated version of the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM 3.0, available at http //mcm.leeds.ac.uk/MCM/). The MCM treats the degradation of 125 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and considers oxidation by OH, NO3, and O3, as well as the chemistry of the subsequent oxidation products. These steps continue until CO2 and H2O are formed as final products of the oxidation. The MCM has been constructed using chemical kinetics data (rate coefficients, branching ratios, reaction products, absorption cross sections and quantum yields) taken from several recent evaluations and reviews or estimated according to the MCM protocol (Jenkin et al., 1997, 2003 Saunders et al., 2003). The MCM is an explicit mechanism and, as such, does not suffer from the limitations of a lumped scheme or one containing surrogate species to represent the chemistry of many species. [Pg.4]

It is interesting that in the RBigSis system, the Gd phase has a transition at 3.2 K with no transition above 1.8 K for the Tb phase, while the RB25 phase shows opposite behavior with a transition only observed for the Tb phase. Thus the new data suggest that there is a fundamental problem with the formulation of the eurrent aromatics mechanism, and more extensive modifications are required in order for model simulations to be consistent with the available data. We have been funded by the California Air Resomces Board to update the SAPRC mechanism, and developing an improved aromatics mechanism is a priority in this project.
