Experimental Mounting

The nonquantitative detection of radioactive emission often is required for special experimental conditions. Autoradiography, which is the exposure of photographic film to radioactive emissions, is a commonly used technique for locating radiotracers on thin-layer chromatographs, electrophoresis gels, tissue mounted on sHdes, whole-body animal sHces, and specialized membranes (13). After exposure to the radiolabeled emitters, dark or black spots or bands appear as the film develops. The SFA, originally developed by Tabor and Winterton [56], and later modified by Israelachvili and coworkers [57,58], is ideally suited for measuring molecular level adhesion and deformations. The SFA, shown schematically in Fig. 8i,ii, has been used extensively to measure forces between a variety of surfaces. The SFA combines a Hookian mechanism for measuring force with an interferometer to measure the distance between surfaces. The experimental surfaces are in the form of thin transparent films, and are mounted on cylindrical glass lenses in the SFA using an appropriate adhesive. SFA has been traditionally employed to measure forces between modified mica surfaces. (For a summary of these measurements, see refs. [59,60].) In recent years, several researchers have developed techniques to measure forces between glassy and semicrystalline polymer films, [61-63] silica [64], and silver surfaees [65,66]. If multi-section tires or experimental and control tires are mounted on the same axle, as is often the case for tests with truck tires on commercial fleets, the inverse of the above relation should be applied because the tires are now running under an imposed common slip. The development of modern surface characterization techniques has provided means to study the relationship between the chemical activity and the physical or structural properties of a catalyst surface. Experimental work to understand this reactivity/structure relationship has been of two types fundamental studies on model catalyst systems (1,2) and postmortem analyses of catalysts which have been removed from reactors (3,4). Experimental apparatus for these studies have Involved small volume reactors mounted within (1) or appended to (5) vacuum chambers containing analysis Instrumentation. Alternately, catalyst samples have been removed from remote reactors via transferable sample mounts (6) or an Inert gas glove box (3,4). [Pg.15]
