One final technical improvement in soHd-state nmr is the use of combined rotational and multiple pulse spectroscopy (CRAMPS) (2), a technique which also requires a special probe and permits the acquisition of high resolution H and X nucleus nmr from soHds. The combination of these methods permits adapting most of the 1-D and 2-D experiments previously described for Hquids to the soHd phase. [Pg.409]

In the early 1950s, a number of cases of sickness occurred in children who had reportedly eaten candy and popcorn colored with excessive amounts of dye. As a result of these illnesses, new animal feeding studies were undertaken by the FDA. These studies were conducted at higher levels and for longer test periods than any experiments previously conducted and resulted in unfavorable findings for FD C Orange No. 1, FD C Orange No. 2, and FD C Red No. 32. [Pg.432]

At low enough temperatures, only that substitutional isomer which has the lowest ZPVE will be populated. At higher temperatures, however, other isomers may also be found, so that a superposition of several spectra is observed in an ESR experiment. Previously, we have found [1-4] that the abundances of these other isomers are well predicted by a Boltzmann distribution based on the differences in ZPVE. Since the 6-31G(d) and 6-31 lG(d,p) basis sets gave very similar geometries in the present case (see below), the vibrational frequencies and ZPVE for the mono-deuterated isomers were calculated only at the B3-LYP/6-31G(d) level. [Pg.342]

If reactions other than those considered so far did not take place to an appreciable extent, the average degree of polymerization would be directly related to the kinetic chain length v. Assuming termination by combination of radicals, as is indicated by experiments previously cited, each polymer molecule formed in a monoradical-initiated polymerization would consist of two kinetic chains grown from two other-... [Pg.133]

Fourier expansion of p10(a) allows us to calculate relative intensities of the three forbidden bands m2, m, and m,. These are in quantitative agreement with experiment. The agreement is excellent over a wide range of ratios of the key model parameters V6 and F (effective rotational constant), which are taken from experiment. Previous conformational inferences in S0, S, D0 (ground state cation), including our own, were in fact correct. They now rest on solid ground. [Pg.168]

This experiment has two limitations (a) nuclei with short T2 are difficult to be detected and (b) multiplets produce a distorted signal phase after n pulse which inverts the coupled spin states. Both limitations are partially overcome by the stimulated echo experiment (STE).64,65 The main difference with the experiment previously described is that the echo attenuation due to the diffusion competes with Tx rather than with T2. The equation analogous to Equation (13) is now ... [Pg.194]

That is how we have treated this type of experiment previously. We will now consider a somewhat different way to formulate the same experiment the purpose being to be able to set up the experimental design, and the analysis of the data, in such a way that it can be generalized to more complicated types of experiments. In order to do this, we recognize that the value of any individual reading, whether from the experimental subject or the control subject, can be expressed as the sum of three quantities. These three quantities arise from a careful consideration of the nature of the data. [Pg.57]

Due to the presence of low-temperature desorption peak a new desorption site was included to phenomenological model of TPD experiments previously used for the description of the Cu-Na-FER samples [5], The fit of experimental TPD curves was performed in order to obtain adsorption energies and populations for individual site types sites denoted A (A1 pair), B (sites in P channel (A1 at T1 or T2)), C (sites in the M channel and intersection (A1 at T3 or T4)) [3] and D (newly introduced site). The new four-site model was able to reproduce experimental TPD curves (Figure 1). The desorption energy of site D is cu. 82 kJ.mol"1. This value is rather close to desorption energy of 84 kJ.mol"1 found for the site B , however, the desorption entropy obtained for sites B and D are rather different -70 J.K. mol 1 and -130 J.K. mol"1 for sites B and D , respectively. We propose that the desorption site D can be attributed to so-called heterogeneous dual-cation site, where the CO molecule is bonded between monovalent copper ion and potassium cation. The sum of the calculated populations of sites B and D (Figure 2) fits well previously published population of B site for the Cu-Na-FER zeolite [3], Because the population of C type sites was... [Pg.143]

From the results of the small scale thermal analysis experiments previously reported (23,25), it was concluded that the antimony volatilization and bromide release observed for ternary mixtures containing organobromine compounds, which did not undergo intermolecular dehydrohalogenation, could not be accounted for solely on the basis of HBr formation during degradation. [Pg.124]

The results of our experiment would indicate that psilocybin (and LSD and mescaline, by analogy) are important tools for the study of the mystical state of consciousness. Experiences previously possible for only a small minority of people, and difficult to study because of their unpredictability and rarity, are now reproducible under suitable conditions. The mystical experience has been called by many names suggestive of areas that are paranormal and not usually considered easily available for investigation (e.g., an experience of transcendence, ecstasy, conversion, or cosmic consciousness) but this is a realm of human experience that should not be rejected as outside the realm of serious scientific study, especially if it can be shown that a practical benefit can result. Our data would suggest that such an overwhelming experience, in which a person existentially encounters basic values such as the... [Pg.159]

Data can also be inspected by PLS in situations where it is suspected that some external factor influences the data. Assume, for instance, that a new kind of experiment is done in the laboratory. For some reason, it is suspected that the skill in performing the experiment increases with time and that the skill of the experimenter influences the results. A PLS analysis with the experimental results in X and experience (the number of experiments previously performed) in Y can then be used to check this possibility. [Pg.310]

In the animal experiment previously described with a real CO concentration of 0.22%/vol., which was already established before the test animals were even introduced and which, because of the reduced oxygen content of 11.4%/vol., corresponded to an effective CO concentration of (0.22x21 1 1.4 ) 0.4%/vol., it still took more than three hours to kill all of the test animals. It is, therefore, perfectly reasonable and even quite conservative to say that in a similar gassing attempt with humans and with only a gradually increasing CO concentration, the majority of people in the alleged gas chamber would still be alive after one or even two hours. Such a result would have been an utter fiasco. [Pg.458]

Experiments—previously impossible without laser light scattering technology— suggested by this work involve studying the effect on physical properties of varying particle size for different types of elastomers. [Pg.294]

Another Py-GC/MS experiment was performed on polyacrylic /nfer-net-polysiloxane, a copolymer used as impact properties modifier. This is a polymer of butyl acrylate with low levels of allyl, methyl, and 3-(dimethoxymethylsilyl)propyl methacrylates interpenetrated with cyclic dimethylsiloxane. The copolymer has CAS 143106-82-5. The pyrolysis was done at 600 C in He similar to other experiments previously discussed. The pyrogram is shown in Figure 6.7.14 and peak identification is given in Table 6.7.10. [Pg.361]

Several examples of pyrolysis results for acrylonitrile copolymers are given below. One such copolymer is poly(acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate), CAS 24968-79-4. The copolymer has a relatively low level of methyl acrylate comonomer and has idealized formula [-CH2-CH(CN)-]x[CH2-CH(COOCH3)- y (y < x). The pyrogram for this copolymer was obtained at 600° C in He using conditions similar to other experiments previously... [Pg.375]

Figure 7.8 shows relationship between the relative magnetic permeability and the fiber orientation function. The results came from an experiment previously discussed (see Figure 7.4). [Pg.355]

Another factor considered by Schwartz et al. was the material of which the holder in Figure 9 was fabricated. On the basis of theory and experiments previously reported, only small variations are expected for differing metal containers [26,31], and no significant variations were observed for the propagation velocity of lead azide in steel, brass, or aluminum holders (Table V). [Pg.267]

Owing to experience previously gained concerning work-up with the solid enzyme formulations [22] only the liquid enzyme preparations of Novo and Solvay, Alkalase 2.5 L and Protease L 660, respectively, were used in the following studies. Both preparations exhibited nearly the same specific activity in the present reaction. An enzyme concentration of <5% (v/w) with respect to 9 (s/e> 20 [24]) was used in the subsequent experiments of this section. [Pg.405]

Despite finding its origins largely in the hands (or labs.) of biological spectroscopists, there is nowadays an increasing use of NOESY methods for stmctural and conformational analysis of the small to mid-sized molecules encountered in the chemical laboratoiy. The examples presented here demonstrate a variety of systems to which these experiments have been applied and also serve to illustrate some the benefits of using these in preference to the steady-state experiment previously encountered. [Pg.323]
