This process is further favored by biasing the internal expectancy set as, for example, when the subject is not only sleepy but apprehensive. Conscious efforts to maintain vigilance, even under strenuous conditions, may be unavailing because of internal expectancy (let s call it priming) if the perceptual apparatus becomes both a motive force and a shaper of false perception. 

During detailed characterization of a tryptic map of recombinant human tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA), a minor peak was resolved whose mass was not consistent with the expected set of tryptic peptides (L. Keyt and S.-L. Wu, unpublished observation). N-terminal sequence analysis of this fraction showed that it had a sequence containing residues 276-296 of rtPA with Lys-277 present as Hyl. We developed a modified amino acid analysis program capable of detecting hydroxylysine at levels down to 0.05 residues/mol to determine the distribution of Hyl in rtPA as well as in some other proteins derived from mammalian cells. 

The matching benchmark XBenchMatch [Duchateau et al. 2007] and the ontology alignment API [Euzenat 2004] are based on the above metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of matching tools. They assume the availability of the expected set of matches through an expert user. Based on that set and the matches that the matching tool produces, the various values of the metrics are computed. 

The primary purpose of the project close phase is to ensure that the expectations set throughout the project have been met. 

Previously, in this chapter, I have described how cumulative job tenure can help develop realistic safety expectations. Clearly, the school leaver applicant has not had the opportunity to adjust their safe expectations based on previous work experience. However, educators and parents can play an important role in safety-specific expectation setting. Parents and educators can deliver key messages about workplace safety either informally as part of parenting or formally as part of the school curriculum activities. While parents may not have a legal responsibility to ensure their child s safety at work, as parents they do have a moral responsibility. In my view, realistic safety information should form a specific section in a job description. Figure 3.1 is an example of what a safety section in a job description might look like. The acmal information in the safety section of a job description should be derived from a careful analysis of the job, from internal accident data associated with the job, and from global accident trends associated with the job. For the information to help with expectation setting, it needs to be as realistic (accurate) as possible. Furthermore, the organization should not distort or adjust the ratings based on their expectations of how safety management systems are likely to reduce the risks. 

Job description and person specification documents that contain safety information can clearly provide the foimdation for the development of a recruitment and selection program which has at least the possibility of a successful outcome. Further, Thompson and Thompson (1982) provide an excellent review of the steps required to help ensure that courts accept job analysis information as the foundation of selection predictor development and or selection decisions. Furthermore, a job description that includes a section on safety can be used in the expectation setting processes as discussed in Chap. 3, Sect. 3.7.2. In contrast, if there has been no systematic attempt to understand what the requirements are to perform a job in a safe manner, it is unlikely that the recruitment and selection system will be delivering the safety benefits that it potentially could. Furthermore, it is likely that employees trust in these processes to deliver a safe new employee may be somewhat misplaced.

One of the key objectives associated with providing risk and hazard information is to help set realistic safety expectations. That is, the provision of safety and hazard information can form a realistic safety preview. Chapter 3 describes four different types of job applicant and described how the four types vary in terms of safety expectations and previous job experience. Job applicants classified as school leaver or career transition applicants will have the least amount of relevant job experience and are likely to have the most unrealistic safety expectations. Clearly, safety expectation setting procedures will be of most benefit to those job applicants. However, it would be unwise to forgo the use of a realistic safety preview, based on the assumption that the job applicant, because of their previous experience, would not benefit from the process. Tables 3.1 and 3.2, in Chap. 3, show that there are safety risks associated with aU job applicants, including career-focused applicants, and these can be reduced by providing a realistic safety preview. If fragmentation involves only the urethane group, one would expect sets of peaks for various combinations of n and nt. The smallest of these should be due to cleavage of the PPG units alone from either end of the molecule tiiese would correspond to m = 0. Some software, such as validation or chromatographic software, enables t-testmg of the intercept or the slope of the recovery function compared to theoretically expected set points 0 or T . However, this strategy for a statistical test procedure does not apply for our purposes and results may be imreliable. 

A technological system, a machine, can be formally described as a finite state automaton or a state machine in terms of a set of inputs, outputs, internal states, and state transitions. But such a description also forces designers (and managers) to think of humans in the same way. In order for the machine to work and produce a pre-defined output, it must get a correct input. This means that the user must respond in a way that corresponds to the pre-defined categories of input. It is also necessary that the output is correctly interpreted by the user, i.e., that it can be correctly mapped onto one of the pre-defined response possibilities. If the user fails to accomplish that, i.e., if the user s response is not included in the expected set of responses, the system will in effect malfunction.

We will present the development methodology of the computerized interlocking module (MEI) and its eharacteristies adapted for the railway environment. We will try to advanee some implemented principles, irmovative in their implementation but eonventional in their problems. In response to the expectations set forth in the preeeding sections, the main idea was to develop an industrial safety automaton having a low-eost, reusable development chain, which behaves like an abstract machine (a factual automaton with zero transition time) in order to allow for subsecpient formal validation.
