A number of refinements and applications are in the literature. Corrections may be made for discreteness of charge [36] or the excluded volume of the hydrated ions [19, 37]. The effects of surface roughness on the electrical double layer have been treated by several groups [38-41] by means of perturbative expansions and numerical analysis. Several geometries have been treated, including two eccentric spheres such as found in encapsulated proteins or drugs [42], and biconcave disks with elastic membranes to model red blood cells [43]. The double-layer repulsion between two spheres has been a topic of much attention due to its importance in colloidal stability. A new numeri-... [Pg.181]

Rheology. Flow properties of latices are important during processing and in many latex appHcations such as dipped goods, paint, inks (qv), and fabric coatings. For dilute, nonionic latices, the relative latex viscosity is a power—law expansion of the particle volume fraction. The terms in the expansion account for flow around the particles and particle—particle interactions. For ionic latices, electrostatic contributions to the flow around the diffuse double layer and enhanced particle—particle interactions must be considered (92). A relative viscosity relationship for concentrated latices was first presented in 1972 (93). A review of empirical relative viscosity models is available (92). In practice, latex viscosity measurements are carried out with rotational viscometers (see Rpleologicalmeasurement). [Pg.27]

More recendy, however, the technology of introducing a new functional group to the double bond of allyl alcohol has been developed. Adyl alcohol is accordingly used as an intermediate compound for synthesizing raw materials such as epichlorohydrin and 1,4-butanediol, and this development is bringing about expansion of the range of uses of allyl alcohol. [Pg.71]

A number of theories have been put forth to explain the mechanism of polytype formation (30—36), such as the generation of steps by screw dislocations on single-crystal surfaces that could account for the large number of polytypes formed (30,35,36). The growth of crystals via the vapor phase is beheved to occur by surface nucleation and ledge movement by face specific reactions (37). The soHd-state transformation from one polytype to another is beheved to occur by a layer-displacement mechanism (38) caused by nucleation and expansion of stacking faults in close-packed double layers of Si and C. [Pg.464]

Celanese recently announced an expansion that will double its tow and flake capacity from 35,750 metric tons to 60,500 metric tons by 1994 (106). The increased capacity will be achieved through expansions and productivity improvements at the U.S., Belgium, Canada, Mexico, and China operation centers. [Pg.257]

An effective way of preventing vent loss is to use one of the many types of variable-volume tanks. These are built under API Standard 650. They may have floating roofs of the double-deck or the singledeck type. There are hfter-roof types in which the roof either has a sldrt moving up and down in an annular hquid seal or is connected to the tank shell oy a flexible membrane. A fabric expansion chamber housed in a compartment on top of the tank roof also permits variation in volume. [Pg.1016]

Double Layer Pipe expansion is a significant factor at tenmera-tures above 600°F (3I6°C). Above this temperature, insiilation should be apphed in a double layer with all joints staggered to prevent excessive heat loss and high surface temperature at joints opened by pipe expansion. This procedure also minimizes thermal stresses in the insulation. [Pg.1103]

Control Valve - Double-seated control valves are considered to pass sufficient leakage flow that equipment blocked in by such valves need not be provided with thermal expansion protection. [Pg.147]

Of course, this simple picture constitutes only a crude approximation and should be valued only for showing that the completion of a metal layer around C o with 32 Ba-atoms is, indeed, plausible. More precise predictions would have to rely on ab initio calculations, including a possible change in bond lengths of Qo> such as an expansion of the double bonds of C o due to electron transfer to the antibonding LUMO (as was found in the case of QoLii2[I2,131T... [Pg.171]

Tn general. Nelson and Schut s procedure is recommended for expansion of an unsymmetrically substituted cyclohexanone (for example, the A ring of a steroid 3-ketone). The yield is satisfactory in most instances and the precursors are readily available. However, the relative proportions of the two possible ketones may change as substituents are varied. The procedure is applicable to systems with additional ketones protected as ketals, double bonds, ethers and hydroxyl groups. [Pg.373]

Birch s procedure for tropone synthesis appears to be widely applicable to 2,3- or 2,5-dihydroanisole derivatives which are readily obtained by reduction of appropriate aromatic methyl ethers by alcoholic metal-ammonia solutions. " Additional functional groups reactive to dibromocarbene or sensitive to base such as double bonds, ketones and esters would need to be protected or introduced subsequent to the expansion steps. [Pg.373]

Practical configuration interaction methods augment the Hartree-Fock by adding only a limited set of substitutions, truncating the Cl expansion at some level of substitution. For example, the CIS method adds single excitations to the Hartree-Fock determinant, CID adds double excitations, CISD adds singles and doubles, CISDT adds singles, doubles, and triples, and so on. [Pg.267]

The MPn method treats the correlation part of the Hamiltonian as a perturbation on the Hartree-Fock part, and truncates the perturbation expansion at some order, typically n = 4. MP4 theory incorporates the effect of single, double, triple and quadruple substitutions. The method is size-consistent but not variational. It is commonly believed that the series MPl, MP2, MP3,. .. converges very slowly. [Pg.206]
