Expanded from glasses

Perlite is an expanded volcanic glass. It is thin and diaphanous except where interconnections of glassy bubbles give the impression of veins. If the veins are separated from the glassy film, they may loosely resemble chrysotile asbestos. The separation is seldom complete. Close observation will detect the film fragments associated with the vein structure. [Pg.29]

In recent years, the uses of synthetic polymers have expanded from making simple objects to much more complex applications such as targeted drug delivery systems and flexible solar cells. In any case, the application for the polymer is driven by its physical and chemical properties, notably bulk properties such as tensile strength, elasticity, and clarity. The structure of the monomer largely determines the chemical properties of the polymer, as well as other important measurable quantities, such as the glass transition temperature, crystallinity, and solubility. While some impor-... [Pg.3]

A White ceU consists of a tube, typically made from glass or metal, with mirrors at each end. As seen in Figure 4.31, one end of the cell contains a spherical mirror caUed the field mirror, and the other end of the cell contains a pair of spherical mirrors caUed the objective mirrors. The focal lengths of these mirrors are identical and equal the length of the tube. For example, a 1-meter-long White ceU requires mirrors with a 1-meter focal length. Once the infrared beam enters the ceU it is brought to a focus in the focal plane of the field mirror. The beam expands to fill one of the... [Pg.116]

Roofiag panels have been made from polyisocyanurate foams, both foam- and felt-reiaforced with glass fiber. PhenoHc resias are used especially for decorative laminates for paneling. The substrate may be fiberboard or a core of expanded polystyrene beads. In one case the beads are coated with phenoHc resia, then expanded ia a mold to form a stmctural foam panel. [Pg.335]

The ribbon L of the cracking element is threaded between the tungsten loops M, of which there are five each at the top and bottom and eight at the center. The unit is suspended with a copper wire from the glass cross-support as shown. The lower end is free to drop down as the resistance wire expands this prevents short-circuiting of the element. [Pg.28]
