Irradiation of a PMMA film containing ITX results in rapid photoreduction of ITX as is shown in Figure 5. Similar experiments in a deaerated benzene solution containing PMMA and ITX also result in photoreduction of ITX, albeit at much lower rate. The most likely interpretation of these observations is that triplet excited ITX abstracts hydrogen from the polymer to form a ketyl radical and a macro alkyl radical. The higher photoreduction rate in the film may result from deactivation reactions of triplet excited ITX which are faster in solution than in a glassy film. The triplet lifetime for ITX in a PMMA film is 1 3 sec compared with 10-4 sec in a benzene solution (20). In solution triplet-triplet annihilation... [Pg.464]

Perlite is an expanded volcanic glass. It is thin and diaphanous except where interconnections of glassy bubbles give the impression of veins. If the veins are separated from the glassy film, they may loosely resemble chrysotile asbestos. The separation is seldom complete. Close observation will detect the film fragments associated with the vein structure. [Pg.29]

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of the poled film are investigated using second harmonic generation in transmission. The sample preparation technique results in a poled glassy film possessing a unique axis in the direction parallel to the field direction within... [Pg.404]

Figure 7 (left) The electric field dependence of the time-ofiflight hole mobility for poly(9.9-dioctylfluorene) films. The open circles are data for a film prepared by spin coating. The filled circles are for a sample spin coated on a rubbed polyimide orientation layer, annealed in the nematic phase and then quenched to form a glassy film. [Pg.34]

Boron. Boron compounds have been used to treat wood for fire retardancy. Borax and boric acid, the primary fire-retardant compounds, have low melting points and form glassy films on exposure to high temperature. Borax, also known as sodium tetraborate deca-hydrate, is available in other hydrated states. Sodium tetraborate pentahydrate can be used in place of the decahydrate at a weight ratio of 74 (pentahydrate) to 100 (decahydrate) (81). [Pg.563]

In fact, the photochemical process Is much less sensitive to the rigidity of the system if the azobenzene Is attached as a side chain. Copolymer ABA-MMA exhibited a quantum efficiency only 4-5 times lower In a glassy film then in dilute solution ( ). By contrast. Figure 3 shows the relative quantum efficiencies for the trans-cls Isomerization of a copolyamlde of Isophthallc acid with 4,4 -dlamlnodlphenyl sulfone containing a small proportion of... [Pg.190]
