Ethylene-propylene vulcanization

Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber is polymerized from 60 parts ethylene, 40 parts propylene, and a small amount of nonconjugated diene. The nonconjugated diene permits sulfur vulcanization of the polymer instead of using peroxide. [Pg.1064]

At this point in the process, thermoplastic and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) membranes are complete and are ready for packaging. In the case of ethylene—propylene—diene monomer (EPDM), the curing step occurs before the membrane is ready for packaging. The curing process is accomphshed by placing the membrane in a large vulcanizer where the material is heated under pressure to complete the cure. [Pg.213]

Dithiophosphates. These compounds (13) are made by reaction of an alcohol with phosphoms pentasulfide, then neutralization of the dithiophosphoric acid with a metal oxide. Like xanthates, dithiophosphates contain no nitrogen and do not generate nitrosamines during vulcanization. Dithiophosphates find use as high temperature accelerators for the sulfur vulcanization of ethylene—propylene—diene (EPDM) terpolymers. [Pg.223]

Ethylene—Propylene Rubber. Ethylene and propjiene copolymerize to produce a wide range of elastomeric and thermoplastic products. Often a third monomer such dicyclopentadiene, hexadiene, or ethylene norbomene is incorporated at 2—12% into the polymer backbone and leads to the designation ethylene—propylene—diene monomer (EPDM) mbber (see Elastomers, synthetic-ethylene-propylene-diene rubber). The third monomer introduces sites of unsaturation that allow vulcanization by conventional sulfur cures. At high levels of third monomer it is possible to achieve cure rates that are equivalent to conventional mbbers such as SBR and PBD. Compatibilization along with dynamic vulcanization techniques have been used in thermoplastic elastomer blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) and ethylene propylene diene rubber by Moffett and Dekkers [28]. In situ formation of graft copolymer can be obtained by the use of suitably functionalized rubbers. By the usage of conventional vulcanizing agents for EPDM, the dynamic vulcanization of the blend can be achieved. The optimum effect of compatibilization along with dynamic vulcanization can be obtained only when the compatibilization is done before the rubber phase is dispersed. [Pg.640]

Ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers (EPDM), with their inherent complexity in structural parameters, owe their tensile properties to specific structures dictated by polymerization conditions, among which the controlling factor is the catalyst used in preparing the polymers. However, no detailed studies on correlation between tensile properties and EPDM structures have been published (l,2). An unusual vulcanization behavior of EPDMs prepared with vanadium carboxylates (typified by Vr g, carboxylate of mixed acids of Ccj-Cq) has been recently reported Q). This EPDM attains target tensile properties in 18 and 12 minutes at vulcanization temperatures of 150 and l60°C respectively, while for EPDMs prepared with V0Cl -Et3Al2Cl or V(acac) -Et2AlCl, about 50 and 0 minutes are usually required at the respective vulcanization temperatures, all with dieyclopentadiene (DCPD) as the third monomer and with the same vulcanization recipe. Ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR or EPDM) is, basically, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene. Because of the random arrangement of the monomers in the chain, crystallization does not occur, and the material behaves as a rubber. Just as with polyisobutylene, vulcanization with sulphur is impossible (the chain is saturated). Also here, a small amount of another monomer is incorporated, which enables the vulcanization and thus the use as a technical elastomer. EPR has a high resistance against ageing and chemical attack, and is, compared with other specialty rubbers, relatively cheap. [Pg.20]

A comparatively new group of materials— thermoplastic elastomers or thermoplastic rubbers —combines the ease of processing of thermoplastics with qualities of traditional vulcanized rubbers, especially elasticity. Because of convenience in processing there is much interest too in blends of plastics with elastomers, which may be modified by the inclusion of filler or glass fibre. As an example, a rubber-like material that can be processed as a thermoplastic can be made by blending and melt-mixing an ethylene-propylene rubber with polypropylene. The use of such blends may be helpful when there are needs to reclaim and re-process material, and in order to obtain products with qualities intermediate between those of the main components of the blends. [Pg.137]
