Ethyl acrylate group polyacrylate

PMA is a tough leathery resin with a low Tg and a solubility parameter of 10.5 H. In polymers of alkyl acrylates the solubility parameter decreases as the size of the alkyl group increases. The flexibility also increases with the size of the pendant groups but because of side chain crystallization this tendency is reversed when the alkyl group has more than ten carbon atoms. Polyalkyi acrylates are readily hydrolyzed by alkalis to produce salts of polyacrylic acid. The copolymer of ethyl acrylate (95%) and chloroethyl vinyl ether (5%) is a commercial oil-resistant elastomer. [Pg.158]

In the poly(ethyl acrylate)rubbers described above spirobenzopyran and aromatic azo chromophores were incorporated in the cross-links between the polyacrylic chains. In contrast, Matejika and al. studied cross-linked systems with azo side groups they considered especially the relative importance of the thermal effects occurring during photomechanical conversion. Quite frequently, copolymerization is used to optimize the properties of polyacrylates. For example, copolymers of ethyl acrylate with methyl acrylate provide the required hardness and strength, while small amounts of comonomers with hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, and amide functionalities are used to produce high-quality latex paints for wood, wallboard, and masonry in homes. These functionalities provide the adhesion and thermosetting capabilities required in these applications. Acrylate Copolymer (AC) A copolymer of eight parts of n-butyl methacrylate, one part of ethyl methacrylate and one part of styrene was prepared. 800 g of n-butyl methacrylate, 100 g of ethyl methacrylate and 100 g of styrene were heated with stirring in a 2000 cc three-necked flask, equipped with a reflux condenser and nitrogen inlet. The reaction was carried out at 80°C until a prepolymer of syrupy consistency was obtained. The polymer was very similar in nature to the polyacrylate used in a previous study (7,8), except that it contained no pendant hydroxyl or carboxyl groups needed for the melamine-formaldehyde cure. [Pg.186]

Solvent adhesives and reactive adhesives are made from homo- and copolymers of methacrylates, generally methyl and ethyl methacrylate and, occasionally, butyl methacrylate. Monomeric (meth)acrylates are also used in reactive adhesive systems (polymerization adhesives). Poly(ethyIene glycol) dimethacrylates are the basis of anaerobically curing liquid resins (reactive adhesives). They also are added as adhesion promoters to plastisol adhesives. Acrylate-ethylene copolymers, in some cases with a small content of carboxyl groups, are used instead of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers as fusible polymers for special hot-melt adhesives. Salts of polyacrylate and acrylate - acrylic acid copolymers are used as thickeners for aqueous adhesive solutions and emulsion-based adhesives. [Pg.13]
