Ethics education, engineering-related

I shall proceed on the plausible assumption that such a disconnect exists and is substantial. Why is it important to bridge or at least narrow the gap between engineering-related ethics education and the ethics realities of contemporary engineering practice ... 

In short, there are individual, organizational, and societal reasons why providing engineering students with meaningful engineering-related ethics education makes excellent sense. 

Hopefully, the reader is now persuaded that, all things considered, it would be worthwhile to expose engineering students to study of engineering-related ethical issues in their formal education. But even if that is so, the question remains what kind of approach to providing engineering students with education about engineering-related ethical issues is likely to be fruitful ... 

If a non-engineer guest instructor with expertise in engineering ethics provides the engineering-related ethics education, it is Ukely to be limited to one or two lectures. Unfortunately, class members will almost inevitably perceive the (limited) material covered in such sessions as peripheral to the course. Globalization s benefits for the construction industry have been stated. However, the cross impact on professionalism and ethics has seldom been addressed appropriately. This includes the impact, (often negative) of the inevitable influence of professional practice on international construction market. To stop aU corruption practices, professional ethics education, with international related components, is seen as an essential component of the engineering curriculum (Buckeridge 1994). 

Current ethics education curricula, either stand-alone ethics courses or those providing ethics instruction through core courses such as micro-insertion (Davis 2006), do not usually provide students in civil and construction engineering with training on international related ethical practices that reflect the changing world (Herkert 2000).
