Ethically responsible engineers case studies

Subsequent chapters identify the kinds of ethical issues raised in the cases, the kinds of factors that helped engender them, and noteworthy ideas and lessons extractable from the case studies. I then survey some resources and options that might be useful to those who care about practicing engineering in an ethically responsible way. 

Micro-social. The only previous case study in this book that dealt with engineering research - Case 03, the Schon case - focused on research misconduct and several ethically problematic research practices linked with collaborative research. Here I shall examine ethical responsibilities related to several different ethically questionable research practices, only the first of which is specific to nanotechnology.

This section is concerned with ethics. For engineers, the question of ethics typically boils down to the struggle between the responsibility to ensure public health and safety and the responsibility to the employers, clients, and shareholders of the company. The case study approach is employed to make the reader think about ethical questions, to reflect on their past decisions, and to project forward to their future decisions a higher degree of thought and insight in determining when one is faced with an ethical dilemma. 

Engineering problem solving within an ethical framework, legul responsibilities, and professional registration are developed. Ethics case studies and the content of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Professional Engineering (PE) examinations are included.
