Estimate resolution allowance

As shown along this chapter, a reliable air quality model is a valuable tool for human exposure studies, once modelled concentrations at different spatial scales and time resolutions allow to better characterising the air quality at the microenvironments visited by a target population, rather than monitoring values that are site and time specific. Moreover, air quality and exposure modelling approach considers the contribution of indoor environments, where people spend most of their time, to the exposure estimation. [Pg.271]

As mentioned in the introduction, a chiral auxiliary for asymmetric synthesis or kinetic resolution may not necessarily be enantiomerically pure. In order to make a FPI chemical sensor, the FP cavity needs to be made accessible by the analyte molecules. One way to achieve this is to use a holey sleeve to host the cavity. Xiao et al.7 reported such a fiber FPI gas sensor formed by bonding two endface-polished fibers in a holey sleeve using epoxy. The holey sleeve allows gas to freely enter and leave the cavity. A resolution of 10 5 was estimated in monitoring the changes in the refractive index caused by varying the gas composition. However, the sensor assembly was complicated and required the use of epoxy. In addition, the various components used in sensor construction were made of different materials. As a result, the device had a strong dependence on temperature. [Pg.150]

As previously mentioned, resolution in CIEF strongly depends on the ampholyte composition. The estimated maximum resolving power of IEF is 0.02 pH units when carrier ampholytes are used to create the pH gradient.99 The Law of Monotony" formulated by Svensson in 1967 states that a natural pH gradient increases continually and monotonically from the anode to the cathode that the steady state does not allow for reversal of pH at any position along the gradient and that two ampholytes (in stationary electrolysis) cannot be completely separated from each other unless the system contains a third ampholyte of intermediate pH (or pi). The latter explains why better resolution is obtained when mixing ampholytes from different vendors and production batches as the number of ampholytes species increases, the chance that one or more ampholytes have intermediate pi relative to those of the sample components also increases. [Pg.199]
