The first part of the present work describes the wind erosion model of a horizontal particle bed. A simple test of the model is presented in the second part, which reports the influence of a wide size distribution on the emitted mass flux of particles. [Pg.159]

A refined picture of the interaction dynamics can be incorporated into models whose aim is to predict the extent of polymer erosion in LEO. For example, the empirical models mentioned in Sec. 3.1 have the possibility to make quantitative predictions of erosion yields, but they have suffered from a lack of information about the initiation steps and the reaction products. Both models have assumed that CO and CO2 carry carbon away from the surface, but quantitative predictions depend on the branching between these two products. The models can be extended to include contributions from all oxidation products that may carry mass away from the surface, as long as their identity and relative yields are known. In addition, the accuracy of the model predictions would be improved by knowledge of the initial trapping probability of incident oxygen atoms. Dynamical data, such as those described in Secs. 3.3 and 3.4, can bolster erosion models and thus expand their acceptance by the community. [Pg.472]

Thus the Eyring surface erosion model predicts that chemical reactions in the detonation of spherically grained solid explosives will follow a two-thirds order law. [Pg.782]

The Eyring surface erosion model was applied together with the general absolute reaction rate theory to the rate of mass loss of meteors as they pass through the atmosphere. Atmospheric erosion of the heat shield of space vehicles upon reentry is a problem of great importance to which this theory is directly applicable. [Pg.786]

The presented simple erosion model applies to ductile materials only erosion of brittle materials involves cracking instead of plastic deformation and requires a different approach. Furthermore, the model does not explain the mechanism of formation and detachment of particles, which involves, in a complex fashion, plowing, cutting and chipping phenomena and depends, among other, on particle shape, materials properties and angle of incidence. [Pg.451]

In general it can be concluded, that erosion modeling has, so far, been only successful for some degradable pol) mers. More research in this area will be necessary to develop models that predict the behavior of polymers based on their chemical structure, or models that are at least applicable to a variety of different types of polymers. [Pg.469]

In the "Erosion model" (Plasari et al., 1978) it is assumed that the incoming reactant flows are dispers into lumps, which dissolve gradually in the bulk of the liquid and react there (no reaction in zones a and i, only in c). [Pg.132]
