Sumatriptan Ergotamine

Administered orally, ergotamine and sumatriptan, eletriptan, naratrip-tan, rizatriptan, and zolmitriptan have only limited bioavailability. Dihydroer-gotamine may be given by i.m. or slow i.v. injection, sumatriptan subcutaneously or by nasal spray. 

Do not use dihydroergotamine, 5-HT- agonists (eg, sumatriptan), ergotamine-containing or ergot-type medications, or methysergide within 24 hours of each other. 

Sumatriptan Succinate Sumatriptan is a drug of abuse, and it interacts with ergotamine, serotonin, rizatriptan, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. 

Dihydroergotamine Dihydroergotamine [dye hye droe er GOT a meen], a derivative of ergotamine, is administered intravenously and has an efficacy similar to that of sumatriptan, but nausea is a common adverse effect.

The combination of ergotamine with sumatriptan has been associated with vasospasm in the cerebral arteries (37).

Treatment of Migraine. Many years ago, ergotamine via metered dose inhaler was used successfully to treat migraine headache. I was made aware of this when I first became interested in medical aerosols by a senior professor of medicine who testified to its efficacy. More recently, sumatriptan nasal spray has been shown to provide significant relief of headaches [132]. 

Sumatriptan, an agonist at 5-HT p receptors, is indicated for parenteral treatment of migraine. Ergotamine is also effective for acute migraine but is produced by the fungus Claviceps purpurea. The answer is (J).
