Environmental standard, implementation compliance

In addition to the product quality accreditation, certification programs such as worldwide responsible accredited production (WRAP) can be used to implement international workplace standards by taking into consideration local laws and workplace regulations human resource management health and safety and environmental practices legal compliance including import and export and custom compliance and security standards (WRAP, 2014). 

The ways in which Environmental Quality and Human Health Standards are derived, and the frameworks within which they are used, differ between countries and regions, with standards derived, expressed, monitored, and implemented in different ways. To some extent, this diversity reflects genuine technical differences that must be taken into account in the development of standards for different compartments (e.g., water or soil) or for different receptors (e.g., humans, livestock, or flora and fauna). However, much standard setting has been developed in a piecemeal fashion with little consistency between schemes in the levels of protection sought, the selection of chemicals for which standards may be needed, the methods used to derive them, or the methods used to monitor compliance. These differences can lead to the implementation of substantially different values from the same empirical data, which must mean that their application is either over- or underprotective in at least some situations.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) does not provide detailed guidance as to how a SEMS program is to be implemented because the standard is fundamentally nonprescriptive. Each company and facility will need to develop a SEMS compliance plan that addresses their own needs and circumstances. Some thoughts as to how this can be done are presented in this chapter. 

With textiles being so much a part of international trade, we expect increased interest in compliance with international standards, development of further international/ regional agreement on methods, and development and implementation of processes leading to authentication (organic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and country of origin). Textile artifacts will continue to reveal rich histories. 

Managers need to demonstrate their commitment to safety, health and environmental issues to interested parties such as stakeholders, customers, the community, voluntary organisations and the authorities. One way of doing so is to implement voluntary standards on SHE management and to receive proof of compliance from an independent certifying body. In order to receive such a certificate, the company s SHE management system has to be audited by the body to demonstrate that it is operating effectively in conformance with the standard.
