Environmental Permitting Regulations

The relevant legislation for tanneries regarding the use of chemicals can be found both in legislation regarding environmental permits for the industrial installations which in some cases addresses substitution of chemicals. One example of this is the EU Industrial Emissions Directive [4] which regulates emissions from industrial installation within the EU. One key aspect in this directive is how problematic chemicals should be substituted to more environmentally friendly alternatives by tanneries. [Pg.250]

Indiana, as a condition of granting a permit for an incinerator that generates or treats a hazardous waste associated with chemical munitions, by statute, requires proof from the facility that its emissions, alone or in combination with other substances, pose no risk of an acute or chronic human health effect or of adverse environmental effect (Indiana Code 13-22-3-10(a)(2)). However, neither the Indiana Department of Environmental Management regulations nor the Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (NECDF) permit specifically calls for submission of an HRA.14... [Pg.50]

Prosecutions fines in 1998 there were no fines or prosecutions, but there were eight claims pending, and there were infringements of permit regulations at 11 plants. The nature of the incidents is reported. FIM 15 million was spent in cleaning up spills, and FIM 3 million was provided for future damage from them. Other environmental liabilities are described. [Pg.274]

Environmental Controls in Production. Environmental permit requirements should be evaluated based on the commercial-scale material balance and new equipment specifications. Testing requirements for environmental evaluation should include acute fish and invertebrate toxicity for raw materials, intermediates, and products biodegradation of raw materials, intermediates, and products microbial growth inhibition of raw materials, intermediates, and products water coefficients (KOW) and water solubility for raw materials, intermediates, and products and waste treatability test results. Particular emphasis should be placed on the evaluation of the compatibility of the new process waste streams with the existing waste-treatment systems. If any process waste streams require off-site disposal into regulated hazardous waste landfills, leaching experiments may also be required. [Pg.420]

This factor also specifically evaluates environmental regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and by states regarding the destruction of chemical weapons and materials. Key in this evaluation is the ability of the technology to satisfy environmental permitting requirements, especially those that were established under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) for a miscellaneous unit. The... [Pg.44]

The EBR-n, 62MW(t), has completed decommissioning steps and is now in a radiological and industrially safe condition at the direction of the US DOE. These activities followed removal of fuel for conditioning and the disposal of all bulk sodium coolant. As required by US regulations, residual sodium within reactor system will be deactivated under appropriate environmental permits after which the EBR-II will await future dismantling. [Pg.6]

The law requires a shared workplace practices, thereby ensuring smooth transport in the Port. Kemi Shipping has its own environmental permit for its repair shop in addition, the company operates under the environmental permit issued to the Port of Kemi Ltd. This is an example on how closely the companies are bound together. As Kemi Shipping is in charge of most of the internal traffic in the Port, it is vital that the rules and regulations of the Port of Kemi Ltd. are followed. [Pg.78]

Treatment may be conducted as disposition actions. Treatment requires a state or federal EPA treatment permit unless exempted from permit requirement, and may require coordination with local officials (for example, fire department) and the development and implementation of a health and safety plan. Other environmental permits (for example, air permits) are often required. Other regulations may apply. [Pg.194]

Disposal of arsine by neutralizing, scrubbing, incineration, or by other means may be subject to permitting by federal, state or provincial regulations. Persons involved with disposal of arsine should check with the environmental authorities having Jurisdiction to determine the applicability of permitting regulations to disposal activities. [Pg.271]
