The report starts with the CEO s preface, presents the SEIE standards, then describes the group s activities and its SEIE management system. A dialogue chapter (new to the report) discusses genetic engineering, presents safety statistics and discusses relations with the community. Further discussion and objectives are presented both under business sector headings and geographical area. The report concludes with the environmental data. 

The total cost of material fracture is about 4% of gross domestic product in the United States and Europe (88,89). Fracture modes included in the cost estimates were stress-induced failures (tension, compression, flexure, and shear), overload, deformation, and time-dependent modes, such as fatigue, creep, SCC, and embrittlement. Whatever the particular field of endeavor and the name it is given, the entirety of the practice of safety is represented in this definition. It appMes to all occupational fields for which the generic base is hazards—occupational safety, occupational health, environmental affairs, product safety, all aspects of transportation safety, safety of the pubMc, health physics, system safety, fire protection engineering, and so on. 

Founded in 1911, ASSE is the world s oldest and largest professional safety organization. Its 33,000 members manage, supervise, and consult on safety, health, and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government, and education. ASSE has 12 divisions and 148 chapters in the US. and abroad. It also has 64 student sections. The engineering Division is most closely related to System Safety.
