Systems. Corrosion is usually studied in an isolated fashion in the laboratory, but in practice is clearly the result of interacting systems in the environment. Studies need to be conducted on the way in which the component parts of corroding systems Interact under actual environmental conditions, and on the way in which the components of the environment interact with the total corroding system. This would suggest not only design work for corrosion protection systems, but also additional work on the sensing and monitoring of corrosion in real hostile environments. [Pg.13]

We next discuss x-ray absorption studies. To put matters in context, it is useful to understand that conventional studies using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) can be carried out only ex situ in high vacuum after electrochemical treatment since the techniques involve electron detection. In addition to OCs, PBDEs, the popular brominated flame retardants, are now a worldwide problem even in remote areas, and Asia-Pacific region is surely no exception (Ikonomou et al., 2002 Birnbaum and Staskal, 2004 Ueno et al., 2004). PBDEs are structurally similar to PCBs and DDT and, therefore, their chemical properties, persistence and distribution in the environment follow similar patterns. Studies on the environmental behavior of PBDEs are chiefly derived from Europe, North America and the Arctic. Despite the usage of vast amounts of these compounds in Asia-Pacific region, there is a paucity of data on the prevalence of PBDEs in Asian environment.
