IS refers to the software packages and databases that provide the functionality to implement the business processes. These include such packages as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) and Maintenance Management Systems. 

The last group encompasses standard software systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems like those from SAP, Baan, or Oracle. ERP systems offer greater flexibility with respect to customization, provide support for data management, and include functionality for creating and managing a (sub)repository. The main weakness is in active analysis of business structures—that is, ERP tools typically do not offer tools for simulation process alternatives.

An enterprise resources planning system is a set of software modules that provides a company with the capability of automating the transactions involved with its business processes. The ERP system provides a common database and establishes uniform policies and practices across the entire enterprise. This allows real-time access to the data. An ERP system is an outgrowth of the traditional manufacturing software systems such as Material Requirements Planning Systems (MRPII). The traditional systems focused on planning and optimization of these plans. The ERP system expanded beyond these to serve additional functions in the firm. 

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) ERP systems are comprised of software programs that tie together all of an enterprise s various functions — such as finance, manufacturing, sales, distribution, procurement, and human resources. This software also provides for the analysis of the data from these areas to plan production, forecast sales, and analyze quality.

Enterprise Resource Planning systems are relatively new and are associated with the development of IT and Internet applications. The basic idea of ERP systems is that they provide management information systems that reduce the data rich information poor situation often found in companies due to the proliferation of IT systems that cannot speak to one another effectively. One of the most common applications is SAP, although there are many others including those offered by Oracle and Microsoft etc. 

Patient and resource management in a medical imaging center is provided by informatics systems generically named RIS (Radiology Information System). From the software point of view these can be classified as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) application. 

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems provide the transactional tracking and global visibility of information from within a company and across its supply chain. This realtime information helps a supply chain improve the quality of its operational decisions. ERP systems keep track of the information, whereas the Internet provides one method with which to view this information. 

The input data processed by the simulation is characterized by a high degree of complexity which is caused by the differentiated consideration of the material flow in terms of products as well as suppliers and customers. The data can be made available by estimation, calculation by hand or integration of the quantification approach to an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. However, in every case the timely effort in data collection is very high and needs the support by key decision-makers who have to provide required resources.
