The Enlightenment

Where usefjl, actual examples will be given and computer simulated experiments will be shown. In general, references to real life cases from the author s experience will be made available, when possible, to enlighten the subject. [Pg.3]

This detailed outline of the basic tenets and philosophy of the Fraternity of the Rose Cross is biblically based, with ample quotations from the Gospels, especially Matthew and John, and from James. Two roads are offered for man s journey The first suggests that faith alone is enough to attain enlightenment, the second asks that we make efforts and sacrifices. The Great Work is an outgrowth of the latter process"... [Pg.500]

On the "chemical philosophy" of the Paracelsian tradition, see Allen G. Debus, The Chemical Philosophy Paracelsian Science andMedicine in the 16th and 17th Centuries, 2 vols. (New York Science History Publications, 1977). Also see Arthur Donovan, Philosophical Chemistry in the Scottish Enlightenment The Doctrines and Discoveries of William Cullen and Joseph Black (Edinburgh Edinburgh University Press, 1975). [Pg.78]

No wonder the average citizen does not fully understand chemical warfare, when even the best-informed experts do not provide us with straightforward explanations. But perhaps they should not be too harshly criticized. Descriptions of the mechanisms and sequence of nerve gas effects are complex. Efforts to provide the details may produce confusion rather than enlightenment. The deadliness of mortar shells and Kalashnikovs may be familiar, but the complex effects of chemical weapons are not. [Pg.2]

This chapter describes our group s contribution towards the development of methodologies that are useful in accomplishing various functional group manipulations by making use of the catalytic properties of bismuth salts. We hope this effort may enlighten the interest of many students and scientists in this field. [Pg.265]

Chemistry offers vast material, little light, much work Philosophy has not provided any clarity the principles that are followed are obscure or uncertain the books are presented in terms more appropriate to hide the ignorance of their authors than to enlighten the mind. To these shadows the chemists often join fairy tales finally they are always in dispute with one another, they accord neither with themselves nor with nature. [Pg.109]

The DNA sequences in nature encode proteins with very specific functions. In CB, algorithms are used to enlighten the 3-D structure of these functional proteins. This requires the combinatorial work of physics, chemistry, and biology. The information obtained from the analysis of other proteins with similar amino acid sequences form the basis of this work. This allows the use DNA sequences to model protein structure. [Pg.122]

A deeper investigation [98] of 44 proves to be most enlightening. The model molecule 45 has an emission lifetime of 420 ps. For metal-free solutions... [Pg.113]

A specific numerical example is enlightening. The KD value of naphthalene for an initial Tween 80 dose of 7.63 mM is 0.0075 L/g (i.e., the last point in Fig. 5d corresponding to Ssurf = 5.32 mM this dose also corresponds to a sorbed Tween 80 concentration of 29 pmol/g as can be seen in Fig. 1). This value greatly exceeds the A/Dwhen no Tween 80 is present in the system. In other words, addition of Tween 80 to this model system or a similar type of aquifer system would lead to an increase in naphthalene retardation, not a decrease as would be desired for SEAR applications. Because the plateau for Tween 80 sorption occurs near the above dose (i.e., 770 x CMC, Fig. 1), it is expected that much higher doses would be needed to overcome the enhanced retardation effects caused by Tween 80 sorption to the aquifer matrix. These very high surfactant doses, however, would likely not be practical for real world applications. A more useful approach, therefore, would be to utilize the Tween 80 to increase retardation in this particular system the optimum dose to use would correspond to a maximum KD value. [Pg.210]

This Professional Edition of a pragmatic guide is designed to enlighten the industry at large, which suffers somewhat from the confusion created by earlier guidance documents now withdrawn. Written by an international expert in computer software and computer validation, it will become a classic of its kind when properly used to help companies implement their compliance requirements to meet the FDA and the MCA. [Pg.284]

Metal loading studies of this type serve to enlighten the factors which control the impregnation of organometallics into zeolites, as well as providing an indirect probe of internal versus external location of the metal guests. In the following, a direct spectroscopic probe of this kind of process is presented. [Pg.215]

In connection with this conceptually very simple criterion it is also useful to notice that its credibility is supported not only intuitively but can also be justified theoretically in a way which enlightens the origins of the frequently expected, but... [Pg.11]

God gives the first in its perfection to Saints and the children of Heaven enlightens the mind of man so that it may acquire the second, and the Demon throws into it clouds to suggest the spurious ones. [Pg.61]

Liberation is the nervous system devoid of mental-conceptual activity. [Realization of the Voidness, the Unbecome, the Unborn, the Unmade, the Unformed, implies Buddhahood, Perfect Enlightenment - the state of the divine mind of the Buddha. It may be helpful to remember that this ancient doctrine is not in conflict with modem physics. The theoretical physicist and cosmologist, George Gamow, presented in 1950 a viewpoint which is close to the phenomenological experience described by the Tibetan lamas. [Pg.14]

One cannot predict what visions will occur, nor their sequence. One can only urge the participants to shut the mouth, breathe through the nose, and turn off the fidgety, rationalizing mind. But only the experienced person of mystical bent can do this (and thus remain in serene enlightenment). The unprepared person will be confused or, worse, panicky the intellectual struggle to control the ocean. [Pg.21]
