Engineering concept stage

The story reported that engines were being perfected in secret in London that would enable aeroplanes to smash the distance record make long flights in the stratosphere and fly non-stop around the world without refuelling. The project never went beyond the concept stage, however. Four decades later, Erren recalled that the prototype plane, a Rolls-Royce-powered De Havilland, was ready to go, but that the idea fell by the wayside because of disputes as to whether the attempt would be made from Britain or from Germany. 

The reaction engineering (see Section 8.2.1) is advanced insofar that many alternative process concepts [lie, 15d] were tested during the development phase however, only a few were pursued further in the concept stage up to the pilot plant reactor. There remained the principle of the biphasic Ruhrchemie/Rhone-Poulenc oxo process which was developed in long-term tests and protected by a matched patent strategy, as described in Section 6.1.3. 

To serve as a reference, an example of a pohcy/procedure statement on safety in the design process follows. Its intent is to announce that hazards are to be addressed during early design concept stages, and as an integral part of a concurrent engineering program.

At the concept stage, process developers review alternative preliminary flow sheets and provide sketchy parameters. The materials engineer looks for showstoppers that indicate the need for an alternative process, such as excessive temperatures... 

Throughout the Concept stage, systems engineers will extract, clarify, and prioritize all of the written directives captured in the source requirements. These requirements will be expanded by a number of activities designed to break down the broad requirements statements and reveal the need for additional clarification, which will lead to either revision of the written source material or additional requirements.
