Engine starting fluids

Contained in engine-starting fluid purchased at automotive stores. To remove liquid ether from an engine-starting aerosol can, spray the contents of the can down a 12 inch ( 30cm) length of 3/4 inch PVC pipe. The ether will condense on the sides of the pipe and fall into the jar, while the inert propellant will be released into the air. Ether is extremely volatile. Ether floats to the top of the jar. [Pg.14]

Engine starting fluids include ethers or other extremely volatile hydrocarbons used in gasoline and diesel engines to help in cold-weather starting. [Pg.219]

Engine starting fluids often have diethyl ether as a major component. Its high flammability makes it useful for this purpose. [Pg.384]

Methanol can be converted to dimethyl ether (DME) by passing the vapors over a dehydration catalyst such as silica/alumina or y-alumina at temperatures of 250°C or higher. Dimethyl ether can be used as an aerosol propellant and also as a precursor to a variety of hydrocarbons and organic chemicals it also can be used as a refrigerant and a cold starting fluid for automobile engines. The reaction is [30] ... [Pg.134]

Most complex phenomena are made tractable using cases that are far simpler than the real phenomena. Examples of this type of approach abound in many areas of sci-ence/engineering starting with the ideal gas law for predicting fluid properties. This ideal case is then considered as the basis, and the deviations from this ideal case (fugacity/activity coefficient) represent the behavior of the real system. In the case of turbulence, two classes are defined. [Pg.89]

Some engineers rearrange the sequence of the code although the information remains essentially the same. The line number sequence is conveniently arranged to start with one (1) or 100 for each of the fluid designations (CL, P, etc.). Since the sequence numbers are for coordi-... [Pg.18]
