In a paper presented at the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference [1], the authors discussed the theory of heat transfer through an insulation system and pointed out the design requirements of a high-efficiency insulation system. Preliminary results of the experimental work with such insulation was presented and correlated with theory. [Pg.32]

The modern discipline of Materials Science and Engineering can be described as a search for experimental and theoretical relations between a material s processing, its resulting microstructure, and the properties arising from that microstructure. These relations are often complicated, and it is usually difficult to obtain closed-form solutions for them. For that reason, it is often attractive to supplement experimental work in this area with numerical simulations. During the past several years, we have developed a general finite element computer model which is able to capture the essential aspects of a variety of nonisothermal and reactive polymer processing operations. This "flow code" has been Implemented on a number of computer systems of various sizes, and a PC-compatible version is available on request. Some very nice engineering and experimental work was performed by Pollard et al. in measuring a fungal fermentation in real time.21 The work was performed on a 75-1 fermentor and showed detection limits for fructose, glutamate, and proline in production matrices of 0.1,0.5, and 0.5 g/1, respectively. Prior to World War II the majority of experimental work in the field of sprays concerned itself with Diesel engine injection problems. Sauter (21C) has suggested that the efficiency of atomization is determined by its fineness and uniformity. De Juhasz (2C) has determined the effect of many different variables on the process of spraying. The more important physical factors tested include the pressure drop across the orifice, the viscosity of the liquid, and the density of the air. For the many different nozzles tested, the ratio of orifice length to diameter has little effect. To determine the effect of the density of the air into which the liquid was sprayed, the nozzles were allowed to discharge into an evacuated chamber. Under these conditions good results are still obtained, suggesting little influence of air friction on jet breakup. [Pg.140]

A modelling and experimental effort has identified a new uranium thermochemical cycle (UTC) for the production of hydrogen from water. The peak temperature within the cycle is below 700°C - a temperature achievable with existing high temperature nuclear reactors and some solar systems using commercially auailable materials. This paper describes the new process and some of the experimental work. It is an early report of chemical feasibility. Much work will be required to determine engineering and economic viability. [Pg.453]

Initial thermodynamic and experimental studies have found a new thermochemical cycle based on uranium. The operating conditions are mild and most of the steps are commercially used in the uranium processing industry. For several of the process steps, there are multiple process options. Despite its great potential, in the near future CFD will not completely replace experimental work or standard approaches currently used by the chemical engineering community. In this connection it is even not sure that CFD is guaranteed to succeed or even be an approach that will lead to improved results in comparison with standard approaches. For single-phase turbulent flows and especially for multiphase flows, it is imperative that the results of CFD analysis somehow be compared with experimental data in order to assess the validity of the physical models and the computational algorithms. In this connection we should mention that only computational results that possess invariance with respect to spatial and temporal discretization should be confronted with experimental data.
