Another issue with metals is availability. For example, cobalt is not produced in the United States, but it used extensively in a wide variety of alloys and in the production of one of the most common types of lithium batteries. The availability of cobalt is crucial to several segments of American industry. For example, batteries being developed for use in automobiles powered by alternate energy sources are currently envisioned to use a lithium ion battery that also contains cobalt. However, cobalt is not the only strategic metal, and there is concern about the availability of several metals that are vital to industries in the United States, China, and Japan. There will be competition and stockpiling of strategic metals as the reserves become less accessible. [Pg.355]

Lisa was a twenty-eight-year-old graduate student who had been with her current therapist for two years. She d just come back from a school break in the midst of a crisis, and her therapist had never seen her so depressed. Although Lisa wasn t suicidal, she felt heavy and numb, her energy was very low, and she had lost virtually all interest and motivation. As a graduate student, she was particularly concerned about not being able to think clearly, which was causing her to fall behind in her schoolwork. [Pg.216]

In summary, if you can do all your work in SI, you need never be concerned about force-mass conversions (N = kg m/s ) or energy conversions (J = N-m=W s). If you are confronted with problems (or literature, or current U.S. legal definitions) involving the kgf, Ibf, cal, kcal, or Btu, you must follow the rules outlined above Always write down the dimensions, treat the dimensions as algebraic quantities, and multiply by 1 as often as needed to get the quantities into the desired set of units, using the appropriate values of the force-mass conversion factor and the thermal-mechanical energy conversion factor. Even in SI, if you stray from the basic units (m, kg, s, A, K, mol, and cd), you will need conversion factors such as... [Pg.23]

Judith A. Bradbury, technical manager at Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, is currently evaluating public involvement programs across the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) complex. She previously completed a series of evaluations of the effectiveness of DOE s 12 site-specific advisory boards and led an assessment of community concerns about incineration and perspectives on the U.S. Army Chemical Weapons Disposal Program. Dr. Bradbury is a member of the Risk Assessment and Policy Association. She earned a B.S. in sociology from the London School of Economics, an M.A. in public affairs from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. [Pg.59]

There is some concern about whether surface-washing agents can result in appreciable amounts of dispersed oil. Some products currently listed as surface-washing agents do disperse the oil given moderate agitation or sea energies. If this occurs, the situation can be similar to that with dispersants. [Pg.513]
