In several smdies, parenteral exposure of pregnant rats and mice has produced embry-otoxic, fetotoxic, and teratogenic effects however, maternal toxicity was not adequately evaluated, and the selective developmental effects of acetaldehyde cannot be evaluated."... [Pg.13]

Oral doses of 0.3 g/kg acetamide administered on days 6 through 18 of gestation produced no toxicity or terata in rabbits. No maternal toxicity was seen at 1 g/kg, although one rabbit aborted fetal numbers and body weights were lowered, with no terata. At 3 g/kg, maternal toxicity was encountered, fetal numbers and weights were reduced, the number of dead implants was elevated, and cleft palate was seen. No reproductive, embry-otoxic, or teratogenic effects were observed in... [Pg.14]

Several studies in rats, mice, and rabbits demonstrate that cycloheximide is embry-otoxic, fetotoxic, and teratogenic. Intraperi-toneal administration of doses as low as 250 pg/kg on day 10 of gestation produced central nervous system, craniofacial, and cardiovascular system abnormalities in rats. Musculoskeletal abnormalities were produced in mice after intraperitoneal administration of doses as low as 30mg/kg on day 9 of gestation. Subcutaneous administration of 5 mg/1 cycloheximide on day 11 caused postimplantation mortality in the mouse. Effects on fertility were observed in pregnant rabbits administered as little as 5 pg/kg on day 1 of gestation. [Pg.198]

Figure 1.10 Some characteristics of neuroglial cells. A. The neural epithelium derives embry-onally from the ectoderm and differentiates in neuroblasts and neurons and in spongioblasts that will differentiate in astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and ependymal cells as well as migratory spongioblasts that may give rise to neurons. B. Major functions of neuroglial cells. C. Schematic shape of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes and their respective locations with respect to the neuron. (Courtesy of Dr. S. Oklund.)... Hyaluronan promotes cell motility, regulates cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion, promotes proliferation, and suppresses differentiation. It participates in such fundamental processes as embry-ological development and morphogenesis,29,30 wound healing,31,32 repair and regeneration, and inflammation.33-35 Hyaluronan levels increase in response to severe stress, and in tumor progression and invasion.36,37 Recent studies indicate that HA can also exist intracellularly.38-40 The intracellular functions of HA are unknown. [Pg.248]

As well reviewed elsewhere [2], the control exerted by 5a-reduced steroids on erythropoiesis is best explained by transcriptional control of the erythropoietin gene. Certainly, such androgens are actively concentrated in the nuclear chromatin of bone marrow, both in vivo and in vitro. By contrast, the situation is entirely different with respect to 5/3-reduced steroids. In the embryonic and fetal organs of many animals, aetiocholanolone or 5/3-DHT regulate the appearance of a 5 cap-recognition protein, without which the translation of the mRNAs for haemoglobin E (embry-... [Pg.177]
