Lead Elixir

It is generally not recommended to mix medications directly into the EN formula because of concerns that physical incompatibilities between the medications and the formula might lead to tube occlusion. There is some evidence that polymeric formulas are more likely to demonstrate physical incompatibility with medications compared with monomeric formulas, although most of the work in this area has used casein or caseinate-based formulas, and other proteins may act differently.38 The limited data currently available would indicate that acidic syrups and elixirs may be the worst for causing physical incompatibility when admixed with EN formulas. It has been postulated that this incompatibility is due to changes in the protein structure after exposure to acid or alcohol.38... 

A Division of Pharmacology had been formally set up in the Food and Drug Administration in 1935, composed mostly—as one of its members, Edwin P. Laug, remembered—of "biochemists who then changed sails and became pharmacologists" (7] ). To study the toxicity of lead and arsenic pesticide residues formed the division s initial purpose, but the Elixir Sulfanilamide crisis brought an almost total shift of effort to diethylene glycol. 

How well founded was this belief became public on August 6, 1945, when an atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. To be sure, the alchemists had not been looking for a weapon which could destroy civilization. They were seeking a philosopher s stone which could turn the cheaper metals such as iron and lead into the more precious gold, and an elixir of life which would retard old age. To the social-minded scientist the conquest of nuclear energy means a modern philosopher s stone which, if used wisely, could improve the health and wellbeing of tens of millions of people all over the world. 

Elixir An alchemical term referring to a drug or method of extending life or gaining immortality. Many alchemists, particularly in the Indian and Chinese traditions, were more interested in the Elixir of Life than in the creation of gold from lead. 

Many of the Arabs writings even provide directions for the artificial extraction of gold with the help of the Ferment of Ferments , the Elixir of Elixirs . The correct mixture of the four elements is all-important and the spirit (the heated, liquid quicksilver) has to permeate the matter (lead, copper, etc.). The mysterious Elixir itself is created through the correct fusion of the four elements, the body (metal) and the spirit (quicksilver), the male and the female. It assimilates these bodies and colors them (therefore, they are known as tinctures ) thereby transforming them to gold, causing them to multiply the amount thousand times [5],... 

Although not directly related to the physiological process of absorption, it may happen that oral drugs with a markedly bitter taste may lead to poor compliance if administered as a solution, a syrup, or an elixir. The prodrug approach has been used in this context for... 

Although the general toxicity of Ge is low, exposure to germanium can lead to intoxication symptoms in flora, fauna, and humans. Ge products (elixirs, supplements) present a potential human health hazard (Tao and Bolger 1997). 

However, as is stated in the commentary to the Nine Elixirs, the most effective way to protect the compounding of the elixirs is to use talismans (fu) and seals yin) These are worn on one s body, affixed at the four directions, placed along the path that leads to one s dwelling, thrown in the stove, or made into ashes and drunk with water before one compounds the elixirs.
