N-ISELF A process for separating linear hydrocarbons from light naphtha by selective adsorption on a zeolite. Developed by Societe Nationale Elf-Aquitaine, France. 

Major companies like Shell Oil Canada, Society Nationale Elf Aquitaine, France, and Gulf Oil of Canada and the Sulfur Development Institute of Canada, initiated major research and development programs. 

Three high-strength PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based carbon fibres (supplied -by Elf Aquitaine France), corresponding to three different stages of manufacturing, were used in this study ... 

I thank the two institutions that supported me while I wrote this book the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois and the Centre d lnformatique Geologique at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris in Fontainebleau, France. I began writing this book in Fontainebleau while on sabbatical leave in 1990 and completed it there under the sponsorship of the Academie des Sciences and Elf Aquitaine in 1995. 

Besides the valuable information obtained from the companies cited in Refs. 2 and 3, cooperation with Atochem Elf-Aquitaine (Paris and Pierre-Benite, France), E. I. DuPont de Nemours Company (Wilmington, Delaware, USA) and Ems-Dottikon AG (Dottikon, Switzerland) in the domain of industrial photochemistry, as well as with Asea Brown Boveri AG (Baden, Switzerland) for the technical application of excimer light sources in photochemistry, provided many interesting discussions, new insights in problems of industrial chemistry, and valuable new tools for their solution.

The 1983 agreement between ENI and Montedison put some order in Italy s chemical industry, as ENI took over the PVC and polyethylene operations of Montedison. Previously in France, Rhone-Poulenc had sold its petrochemicals division and its thermoplastics to the Elf Aquitaine group. At the same time, steam crackers were being shut down in Feyzin and Lavera, and a vinyl chloride unit in Jarrie. The association between BP Chimie and Atochem in polypropylene and the exchange of Atochem s Chocques unit for ICI s Rozenburg polyethylene unit were other instances of rationalization. 

Within the pharmaceutical industry itself, the wish of each company s management to see its firm reach what is considered a critical size remained a constant feature as the century came to an end and the new millennium began. It led to new national and transnational mergers. In France, Sanofi (Elf Aquitaine) merged with Synthelabo (L Oreal) and Laboratoires Pierre Fabre with BioMerieux. Elsewhere the Swedish Astra and the British Zeneca combined their operations Pharmacia-Upjohn took control of Monsanto and two giant firms, Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham, announced their intention to combine their activities, which would lead to a group with a turnover of 25 billion, exceeded only by Pfizer after its acquisition of Warner Lambert.

In France, Elf has used an electronic nose to discriminate Yves Saint Laurent fine fragrances (Carrasco et al, 1998). In this case, perfume samples were deposited onto a pare strip inside a vial then heated and the vapours were carried by gas flow through the gas sensors. They measured Paris eau de toilette and Paris eau de toilette with off-odours and Opium eau de toilette. The group of Elf-Aquitaine has also examined diesel fuels scented with perfume mixtures (Feldhoff et al, 2000).
