Deposition rates using this process are limited by the fact that each electrode contains a finite amount of filler metal. The time required both to change electrodes and to remove the slag coating between each weld pass lowers the overall productivity of the process.

Covered electrode is the most popular type of filler metal used in arc welding. The composition of the covering on the electrode influences the usability of the electrode, the deposit chemistry, and the specification of the electrode. Covered electrodes can be easily damaged and should be treated with care before use, including storage in special heated ovens once the container is broken.
