Electrochemical Processes Commercial Batteries

The industrial economy depends heavily on electrochemical processes. Electrochemical systems have inherent advantages such as ambient temperature operation, easily controlled reaction rates, and minimal environmental impact (qv). Electrosynthesis is used in a number of commercial processes. Batteries and fuel cells, used for the interconversion and storage of energy, are not limited by the Carnot efficiency of thermal devices. Corrosion, another electrochemical process, is estimated to cost hundreds of millions of dollars aimuaUy in the United States alone (see Corrosion and CORROSION control). Electrochemical systems can be described using the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport phenomena. [Pg.62]

The above process was observed only in the initial cycles. Nevertheless, any electrochemical reduction of As(V) would raise concern about the safety of using LiAsFe in a commercial battery, because, while arsenate in its high oxidation state (V) is not particularly toxic, As(III) and As(0) species From the electrochemical point of view, however, the above reduction could be a benefit, especially for lithium ion cells, since an SET formed on an anode at > 1.0 V vs lithium would be very stable during the operation of a lithium ion cell according to a semi-empirical rule, ° which will be discussed in more detail in section 6. [Pg.73]

The presence of polymer, solvent, and ionic components in conducting polymers reminds one of the composition of the materials chosen by nature to produce muscles, neurons, and skin in living creatures. We will describe here some devices ready for commercial applications, such as artificial muscles, smart windows, or smart membranes other industrial products such as polymeric batteries or smart mirrors and processes and devices under development, such as biocompatible nervous system interfaces, smart membranes, and electron-ion transducers, all of them based on the electrochemical behavior of electrodes that are three dimensional at the molecular level. During the discussion we will emphasize the analogies between these electrochemical systems and analogous biological systems. Our aim is to introduce an electrochemistry for conducting polymers, and by extension, for any electrodic process where the structure of the electrode is taken into account. [Pg.312]

Both batteries and fuei cells utilize controlled chemical reactions in which the desired process occurs electrochemically and all other reactions including corrosion are hopefully absent or severely kinetically suppressed. This desired selectivity demands careful selection of the chemical components including their morphology and structure. Nanosize is not necessarily good, and in present commercial lithium batteries, particle sizes are intentionally large. All batteries and fuel cells contain an electropositive electrode (the anode or fuel) and an electronegative electrode (the cathode or oxidant) between which resides the electrolyte. To ensure that the anode and cathode do not contact each other and short out the cell, a separator is placed between the two electrodes. In 1991 the world s first commercial plant for battery recycling for unsorted household batteries, which uses the Recytec Battery Recycling Process, started operation in Aclens, Switzerland. The technology applies a thermo-mechanical and chemical-electrochemical separation process for recovering valuable materials from unsorted household battery waste. It efficiently refines waste components to raw materials that can be recycled into the industry. [Pg.195]

There is as yet no consolidated opinion as to the optimum electrolyte for lithium-sulfiir batteries. Experiments with solid polymer electrolyte are described, but aprotic electrolyte in a Celgard-type separator commonly used in lithium ion batteries is applied more frequently. A large number of electrolytes has been studied that differ both in solvents and the lithium salt. The greatest acceptance was gained by lithium imide solutions in dioxolane (or in a mixture of dioxolane and dimethoxyethane) and also lithium perchlorate solutions in sulfone. Dissolution of polysulfides in electrolyfe is accompanied by a noticeable increase in viscosity and specific resistance of electrolyte. It is the great complexity of the composition of the electrochemical system and that of the processes occurring therein that prevent as yet commercialization of lithium-sulfiir electrolytes. [Pg.108]

Once the principles of operating in a molten salt environment have been grasped, suitable extrapolations or interpolations of materials requirements and cell and equipment designs can be made between different systems. In bringing a molten salt process into commercial operation, unique materials problems requiring special solutions often limit its progress, but practically never prevent it. Thus, if a desired result may not be achieved for theoretical reasons in any alternative electrolyte, because of electrochemical instability, for example, then initial development costs and difficulties become inconsequential.
