Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy evolutions

Although the evolution of surface chemistry depicts the hydration of bare surfaces, the same process occurs for buried interfaces within an adhesive bond. This was first demonstrated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on an adhesive-covered FPL aluminum adherend immersed in hot water for several months [42], The EIS, which is commonly used to study paint degradation and substrate corrosion [43,44], showed absorption of moisture by the epoxy adhesive and subsequent hydration of the underlying aluminum oxide after 100 days (Fig. 5). At the end of the experiment, aluminum hydroxide had erupted through the adhesive. [Pg.280]

The coatings were applied on a steel substrate and the corrosion resistance was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. By following the evolution of the impedance response of the steel substrate/coating/elec-trolyte system over an extended period of time, the degradation of the coating material and the onset of the corrosion processes can be monitored. In Figure 10.2 we show the impedance diagrams obtained after 24 h immersion in the 0.1 M NaCl solution for the formulations FI and F2. [Pg.231]

The anticorrosion performance of these coatings assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the lower impedance was obtained when BTA was directly added to the sol-gel matrix, whereas the best performance was achieved with inhibitor-doped TiO coated with a hybrid film. In terms of active corrosion protection, there is a periodic decrease/increase of impedance associated with the breakdown followed by the self-healing of the intermediate oxide layer. SVET was employed to study the self-healing ability of bi-layer systems at the micro level. The measurements of local corrosion current evolution in the zones of artificial defects have demonstrated well-defined corrosion activity on the sirrface of AA2024 coated with sol-gel film only, while no corrosion activity was revealed even after 24 hours on the alloy treated with a bi-layer system. The reported resirlts show that the adsorbed inhibitor is leached out from the porous... [Pg.234]

Evaluation of the volume fraction of water in organic coatings in immersion is often made by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS, and based upon the evolution of the coating capacitance. Among the several models and equations proposed for this determination, the most frequently used is the Brasher equation. Most... [Pg.96]

The most common method of electrolytes examination is electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with blocking (usually stainless steel) and/ or reversible electrodes (most often metallic lithium, or other metal, common with the salt used Saraswat et al. 1989). It allows determination of samples conductivity (Bauerle 1969), following the evolution of complete and half cells resistance upon storage (Sannier et al. 2007 Syzdek et al. 2007) sometimes it is used for transference number measurements (Ravn Sprensen and Jacobsen 1982), as well as a complementary technique in the studies on the crystallisation of solid electrolytes (Marzantowicz et al. 2006a,b,c, 2008), where detailed equivalent circuit considerations are applied. Another very important way of studying these systems is a set of DC techniques, i.e. voltammetry (Armand et al. 1980) and DC polarisation (chronoamperometry and chronopotentiometry). They allowed studies of the electrode reactions and examination of transport properties of electrolytes, especially transference number by Bruce and Vincent and co-workers (Bruce and Vincent 1987,1990 Bruce et al. 1987 Christie et al. 1999 Evans et al. 1987 MacCaUum et aL 1986) and/or Newman method (Doyle and Newman 1995 Hafezi and Newman 2000). [Pg.69]
