These empirical laws of electrolysis are critical to corrosion as they allow electrical quantities (charge and current, its time derivative) to be related to mass changes and material loss rates. These laws form the basis for the calculations referenced above concerning the power of electrochemical corrosion measurements to predict corrosion rates. The original experiments of Faraday used only elements, but his ideas have been extended to electrochemical reactions involving compounds and ions.

Electrochemical corrosion measurement results can be strongly dependent upon surface preparation technique. The causes can range from a simple surface area effect of different surface treatments, through secondary effects of the surface preparation technique on the substrate, to chemical changes on the surface during surface preparation and during the time between preparation and immersion in the test medium. 

Electrochemical corrosion measurements can be conducted in HT/HP environments with modification of conventional test vessels and by using few special techniques. In general, most all of the conventional electrochemical techniques performed in glassware have also been conducted inside of HP test equipment. Figure 6 shows a test S5 tem that uses cylindrical electrodes where only the lower portion of the electrode is exposed to the liquid phase of the test environment and where the electrical connections are made externally to the test vessel.
