Electrical durability testing

A force sensor combines a structure that responds to force changes with a sensor that converts these changes into a signal. A torque sensor similarly consists of a torsion or tension element detector, but it also has to transmit the force. Consider the torque for a electric power steering system any failure would immediately mean loss of control of the vehicle, so this must be avoided under all circumstances. Steering column torque requires careful finite element calculation, durability and performance testing to failure, and validation. 

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was applied to produce homogeneous thin films of pure and doped spinel cobalt oxide with similar morphology on the surface of planar and monolithic supports. The planar substrates were used to investigate the thermal stability and the redox properties of the spinel using temperature-programmed methods monitored by emission-FTIR spectroscopy, while the monolithic substrates were used to test the catalytic performance of the deposited films toward the deep oxidation of methane and to evaluate its durability. The high performance of cobalt oxide to oxidize methane in diluted streams was demonstrated at 500 °C. Furthermore, controlled doping of cobalt oxide layers with suitable cations was demonstrated for nickel as an example, which resulted in substantial increase of electric conductivity. 

The film on electrical resistance wire is very durable and is unaffected by expansion or contraction of the wire. Samples of coated wire have now been on life test for over 20,000 hrs. with cycling for expansion and contraction with no film deterioration. 

For the future, our collaborators at General Electric will be installing a more durable protective curtain at the periphery of the test farm in late 1979. We will then be able to resume our studies monitoring health and measuring productivity of adult kelp plants being held in the artificially upwelled deep water. 

Durability. Electrochemical realkalisation has been appUed for over ten years, mainly to structures made with Portland cement concrete. Although well-documented case studies are rare, those available show that the corrosion protection obtained is durable [93]. Laboratory tests followed over several years support the dur-abiUty of the effect on reinforcement corrosion, as long as sufficient electrical charge has been applied [89,90]. As noted above, the amount of charge needed may depend on the cement type. 

Other characterization tests were performed, such as porosimetry by mercury intrusion, thermal analysis and density by intrusion of helium, but the main characterization was possible from the tests already cited. As part of a more comprehensive characterization still in progress, other tests are being performed, namely durability performance tests such as penetration of chloride ions, electrical resistivity, capillary absorption and oxygen permeability. The results presented in this paper refer only related to the mechanical properties of compressive and tensile strength.
