Electric difference generation

With eveiy change in ion concentration, there is an electrical effect generated by an electrochemical cell. The anion membrane shown in the middle has three cells associated with it, two caused by the concentration differences in the boundaiy layers, and one resulting from the concentration difference across the membrane. In addition, there are ohmic resistances for each step, resulting from the E/I resistance through the solution, boundary layers, and the membrane. In solution, current is carried by ions, and their movement produces a fric tion effect manifested as a resistance. In practical applications, I R losses are more important than the power required to move ions to a compartment wim a higher concentration. [Pg.2030]

The rhythm of heart contractions depends on many parameters condition of pacemaker cells and the conduction system, myocardial blood flow, and other factors consequently, arrhythmia can originate for different reasons that are caused by disruptions in electrical impulse generation or conduction. They can be caused by heart disease, myocardial ischemia, electrolytic and acid-base changes, heart innervation problems, intoxication of the organism, and so on. [Pg.245]

Utilization of geothermal energy is of two types, electric power generation and direct use of the heat. In geothermal electric power plants, steam is used to drive turbines in much the same way as in conventional fossil fuel plants. The main difference is that in fossil fuel plants the steam is generated by boiling water by... [Pg.297]

Nuclear size corrections of order (Za) may be obtained in a quite straightforward way in the framework of the quantum mechanical third order perturbation theory. In this approach one considers the difference between the electric field generated by the nonlocal charge density described by the nuclear form factor and the field of the pointlike charge as a perturbation operator [16, 17]. [Pg.122]

There is an important difference between a two-phase and a three-phase motor. The three-phase motor can also be used as an electrical power generator. The two-phase motor, without modification, cannot. The difference is important, in that I once used this fact to avoid tripping off a critical process pump. [Pg.318]

Use of bilayer lipid membranes as a generic electrochemical transducer is an exciting future for food biosensors. A taste sensor with multichanneled lipid membrane electrode was recently developed (93). The electric patterns generated from the sensor are similar to human response. The sensor can distinguish different brands of beer. More details on the taste sensor can be found in Chapter 16 of this book. [Pg.341]

This scheme differs from the various systems in use in industry and academia in that it uses the mole instead of the cc(STP) to express the quantity of matter being transported, the pascal rather than the atmosphere or the cm. Hg. to express pressure, the meter rather than the mil, the inch, or the centimeter to express length, and the second rather than the day to express time. Our experience indicates that the existing variety of unit systems leads to confusion and that calculations of related physical properties such as permeabilities, diffusion coefficients, and solubilities are easier using the SI units. More modern measurement systems which detect permeants by means of the electrical currents generated by individual atoms are easier to analyze when one uses moles rather than cc(STP) to express the amount of matter undergoing transport. Applications involving the transport of mixed permeant species are also easier to deal with on a molar basis. Conversion tables between the SI units and customary units are provided on the SRM certificate and in the appropriate standards documents (4, 5). ... [Pg.92]

Most of the worlds electricity is generated with steam turbines. The major difference between power plants is the type of fuel used to boil the water and change it from liquid to gas. Nuclear power plants use nuclear energy to boil the water in steam turbines, while fossil fuel plants burn fossil fuels, such as coal, to boil the water in steam turbines. [Pg.87]

Another special situation arises when one resource has its origin in two different processes. For instance, when a process uses the electricity provided by an energy company, it is possible that this electricity is generated partly by burning coal and partly by burning natural gas. In this case, the process should be considered to use two different types of electricity electricity from coal and electricity from natural gas. Both types of electricity then have their own derived depletion time and, based on how much they contribute to the total amount of electricity supplied, their own exergy flow. [Pg.228]
