The characteristic property of elastomers is their rubber-elastic behavior. Their softening temperature lies below room temperature. In the unvulcanized state, i.e. without crosslinking of the molecular chains, elastomers are plastic and thermo-formable, but in the vulcanized state—within a certain temperature range — they deform elastically. Vulcanization converts natural rubber into the elastic state. A large number of synthetic rubber types and elastomers are known and available on the market. They have a number of specially improved properties over crude rubber, some of them having substantially improved elasticity, heat, low-temperature, weathering and oxidation resistance, wear resistance, resistance to different chemicals, oils etc. [Pg.174]

Phonons are nomial modes of vibration of a low-temperatnre solid, where the atomic motions around the equilibrium lattice can be approximated by hannonic vibrations. The coupled atomic vibrations can be diagonalized into uncoupled nonnal modes (phonons) if a hannonic approximation is made. A good compilation of the functions of fats in various food products is available (26). Some functions are quite subtle, eg, fats lend sheen, color, color development, and crystallinity. One of the principal roles is that of texture modification which includes viscosity, tenderness (shortening), control of ice crystals, elasticity, and flakiness, as in puff pastry. Fats also contribute to moisture retention, flavor in cultured dairy products, and heat transfer in deep fried foods. Nylon-6. Nylon-6—clay nanometer composites using montmorillonite clay intercalated with 12-aminolauric acid have been produced (37,38). When mixed with S-caprolactam and polymerized at 100°C for 30 min, a nylon clay—hybrid (NCH) was produced. Transmission electron microscopy (tern) and x-ray diffraction of the NCH confirm both the intercalation and molecular level of mixing between the two phases. The benefits of such materials over ordinary nylon-6 or nonmolecularly mixed, clay-reinforced nylon-6 include increased heat distortion temperature, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and dynamic elastic modulus throughout the —150 to 250°C temperature range. [Pg.329]

Two approaches have been taken to produce metal-matrix composites (qv) incorporation of fibers into a matrix by mechanical means and in situ preparation of a two-phase fibrous or lamellar material by controlled solidification or heat treatment.
